Who buys n-scale collections?

I am posting for a friend.

He wishes to sell a large collection of n-scale diesel locomotives, mostly new in box, a lot of Kato. He is a collector and has only run these to test them. The ones that I have seen are in excellent condition. I wish that they were H0.

Has anyone sold locos to a buyer? If so who and how was your experience? There are only a few ads in the MR classifieds. The two that he has tried gave VERY different offers.

Thanks for any leads,

Karl

Your best bet is to sale all of the stuff on ebay if possible. There’s also an ebay seller that buys large collections and will pay you $100.00 cash just for hooking him up with your friend so that they can do business. I’ll see if I can locate the guy and get back with you with the info.

My LHS will buy or consign collections. Never have asked how the consignments work, nor about his pay price.

Another option is to donate to a tax exempt club, as, as far as I know you get to set the value, just keep it reasonable. Then you can take a tax deduction. I have done this a couple of times with things I have decided I did not want or when I had to buy in bulk (stick on weights) to get a good price.

Even if he prefers to sell outright, check with a nearby club to see if anyone in the area deals with such things.

Good luck,

Richard

There is an art and a form to selling on ebay, not that I know it.

You have to have set your price and be willing to wait till someone goes above it. It is very easy to end up selling something for far less than its value. Once or twice my winning bid was so low I actually offered to let the seller cancel the sale so they could list it again. I have also seen items get bid up far beyond what I thought their market value was.

The point is, take some time to learn what you are doing before putting valuable items on ebay. And ALWAYS set a minimum.

That sounds like a viable idea Tracklayer. Plus I can use the money [:)]. Tom doesn’t want the hassle and long time committmentof Ebaying directly but selling all at once to to an EBAY vendor would be fine.

I hope that you can track him down. Thanks.

I will also pass along the donation idea but the tax deduction may not be worth his while vs selling.

Our LHS’s don’t but collections but I will suggest to him that he contact our two local clubs (O and H0) for additional leads.

Good ideas so far!

Remember that ebay fees run you close to 10% N scale yardsale is a much better option. It’s a yahoo group.
