Hello i was just wondering how many people have been on the adirondack scenic railroad and I am interested in there roster of locomotives…
if anyone has any pictures could you ethier email them to me??? any pictures or coments about the adirondack rr would be highly apreciated

Here’s a link to another site with an equipment roster. Not sure how up-to-date it is. I haven’t any recent photos and also haven’t been down to the Utica end of the line. (I live at the Northern end.) As you probably know, the line is only partially in service, with no scheduled trains running in the center portion.

Where is it at New York. Is it a new scenic line?

Utica to Lake Placid, its been around for a while.

The Northern portion (Saranac to Lake Placid) has been running for 4 years. After no trains running into town for 20 years, there suddenly were signs at the crossings that say “Notice increased rail traffic.” Somewhere, I have photos from that first train into town.

HISTORY OF THE ADIRONDACK SCENIC RAILROAD

Dr. William Seward Webb figured the best way to access Nehasane Park, his large hunting preserve to the north, was by train. In 1890, he financed a railroad into the Adirondack wilderness. The original survey for Webb’s “Golden Chariot Route” was laid out from Herkimer to Remsen, then north to Thendara, Tupper Lake, Lake Clear Junction and on to Malone, then down through Chateaugay to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The first train from Herkimer to Thendara was on July 1, 1892 and the first through train ran from New York City to Montreal on October 24, 1892.

The railroad later became part of the New York Central System. The railroad carried the Webb, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Whitney and Roosevelt families along with other not so famous families to their Great Camps in the Adirondack Mountains. It also provided freight service to communities along the way. In 1961, part of the line was abandoned from Lake Clear Junction to Malone. Scheduled passenger service was continued on the Adirondack Division from Utica to Lake Placid but ended in April of 1965. In February 1968 the New York Central System merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad becoming Penn Central Transportation Company. Freight service was continued with decreasing frequency until 1972. In that year, the Penn Central’s application to the Public Service Commission to abandon the line was approved. In 1975, the state of New York purchased the abandoned line.

The line had a brief reprieve when it was returned to service in 1977 when the Adirondack Railway Corporation contracted with the state to run passenger service from Utica to Lake Placid for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid. In February of 1981, problems with the Adirondack Railway Corporation’s management of the line forced the State to terminate the company’s lease. Ownership of the property went to New York State and the railroad was abandoned.

In short, the line was largely operated as the Adirondack Division of the New York Central. The short section from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid was built by the Delaware and Hudson as part of the Chateaugay branch and later acquired by the Central. The D&H built the currently active stations in the two towns. The rest of the branch to Plattsburgh was abandoned.

Some of the abandoned Chateaugay roadbed as well as most of the abandoned NYC roadbed north to Malone is still accessable. I mountain bike those trails and in the winter they are open to snowmobiles, as is the ROW from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid.

I live 6 miles west of Saranac Lake in Bloomingdale, near the abandond Chateuagay branch. My office & business is located in Lake Placid, a couple of blocks up from the station.

I used to live in thendara about a 1\4 a mile from the thendara station. and wow you know quite a bit more about the line than i do… thanks for all the info…[8D][:D]
