I thought of Rene as soon as I realized I had a bird mad at me as I worked by the tunnel area. So the thread has a question only she would ask.
I think these are, rene eggs??? not sure[;)]
Hey Marty, I don’t yet have the RR but if I did then it would be boles, they’re small molesthat tunnel around just underneath the turf. My Yard is starting to look like the Caddyshack golf course. If my cat Kimmy doesn’t start doing her job I’m calling Bill Murry[:D]
Trimmer Matt
Hey check this mole out.
Some can get fairly big.
The traps are the best, just check them 2 times a day or more. If you set it to deep the big ones will preset it, or to shollow the small ones will slip under. I catch 4 to 7 per year.
They are great with BBQ sauce on them also.[^]
Chipmunks; lots of chipmunks. They like to dig in under my cement “mountains” and set up house-keeping. But the worst by far was when they moved into my drainage system behind the wood retaining walls. This system was meant to draw off excess water from behind the walls to prevent rotting. For some unknown reason the chipmunks have plugged the pipes with dirt. So far I have lost about ten feet of retaining wall to rotting because of “Chip & Dale”.
The battle goes on…Larry T.
Larry, I have two Tom cats that could handle them with ease. If we see a squarl around here, its only a matter of time.
Ants! Sometimes, fire ants. I heard that some of y’all use WD-40 which has an insecticidal effect. Does this have an adverse effect on Plastic Aristocraft track ties?
Hey All,
Wild Rabbits. Noticed an unusual grassy area on the side of my mountain like area a few days back. Upon closer inspection is was a freshly dug hole filled with grass. Oh no you don’t…no nesting on the line. Cleaned it out and filled it up. Quiet since…but I’m watching! Later eh…Brian.
I pulled two box turtles and a toad from my layout pond. They were downright PO’d. I have a lizard that hangs around and a black snakc that likes to cool off. Needless to say, I don’t have too many bugs with these critters around.
was clearing out the area I am hoping to resurect the outdoor layout in, uncovering discarded wood and concrete I have so far uncovered three grey salamanders, one was six inches long! Neat alien looking creatures!
Hey I found away of catching Moles and any other little critters by mistake
This season when cleaning my railroad and checked out my water pond that I drained out for the winter,
I found some of these critters fell in to the shallow water that collected over the winter and they could not climb up the wall of the pond.[:(]
I guess they met their Makers .
Heres a “birdy” update photo:
So far our cats have not found them, they are only 18" off the ground.
So ,???what share we name them???[;)]
Marty,
They look like birds eggs. Robin eggs are usually blue, but I have never seen them nest on the ground. Some of the critters that visit our railroad: Deer, coyote, wild turkeys, fox, water rats, opposums, chipmonks, squirrels, snakes, kingfishers, herons, mallard ducks and all kind of local birds, skunks, an occassional sheep from our neighbors yard, a hawk that keeps some of the critters under control, bear, etc, etc and we live in a highly populated area of Connecticut!
George
Oh my gosh! I missed this post this morning! So you have some new “inhabitants” on your railroad. I’m surprised a bird would choose something so low to the ground. I think you should name them after your railroad!
As for the rest of you, I’m a critter lover but understand that some critters cause great damage and need to be controlled. Like Old Dad’s chipmunks, which (I’ve heard) can actually damage foundations and retaining walls with their digging.
Marty,
I’m usually not a rivet counter but looking at your picture it seems that the mole is terribly out of scale ;0)
Those are two different moles. I just got another one today. They just keep coming from the fields.
Ummm – maybe quail? They’re the only birds I can think of out here in the western US that typically nest on the ground. And their eggs are white with brown speckles.
