I’ve been in love with the Mogul type loco for decades but never seemed to get one. Now, I have a layout that could use one. Who currently makes one that can be eqiopped with sound and DCC?
BB
The IHC Premier Mogul has a motor that’s already isolated and a tender with room for sound and a decoder, but it’s not DCC ready. Bachmann makes a Mogul too, but I think it has a split frame design that would make it take a lot of work to insulate the motor and light from the frame.
YOu can convert ANY engine to DCC, with enough effort.
There are currently NO DCC-ready Moguls on the market.
Moguls that are on the market now include two by IHC and one brass kit by Precision Scale (MDC/Roundhouse is no more, and what products that are out there are not technically “currently available”. Athearn/Roundhouse has yet to release any steam, so we don’t yet know what’s available)
Bachmann has never made a Mogul. A USRA 0-6-0 with a lead AND trailing truck, yes.
Be aware that the old MDC Mogul, while a nice looking kit that has oddles of potential, can barely pull itself around a level loop of track. With four cars, it goes nowhere. I used to own two…
There are still MDC ready to Run DCC ready old-time Moguls out there. They run in the neighborhood of $65-75, although Internet Model Trains sells them for $129. The tender is awfully small. Sound might be a problem until N sound units are readily availble.
They are not the best pullers, but not horrible either. Mine gets 8 cars up a 3.1% grade.
The IHC ones are the bigger later models. I have DDC in one of their 4-4-0’s seems like an easy instaltion.
Here are some pictures of the Bachmann Mogul.

The IHC with the exception of the tender, is based upon the Southern Pacific M-4 class.
