Hey guys, Recently at a model show, I picked up this locomotive for $15, I am not sure what it is, but it looks like an EMD F45 or SDP 45F,I am not sure…Anyways, the motor is like the one found in Athearn Locomotives and the sides of the Trucks are metal…Who makes this one and what is it, also, did I get ripped off or do you think it was a good deal…It runs, but it needs a new lightbulb…
I’m not sure which diesel is the prototype (my guess is F45, but I’m more into steam) and the model is, I think, by Athearn. All Athearn diesels originally had metal sideframes. And you got a good deal if you feel that you got a good deal. [swg]

A photo of the insides would help us identify it more than the side view of the trucks. It’s probably an Athearn because they used metal side frames on their trucks.
Why did you buy it if you don’t know what it is or who made it?
I bought it because I have always liked the EMD F-45’s and the SDP 45f’s that Amtrak used, they are a key piece of history, without them, there would be no EMD F40…
Better photos would help - only the second one is viewable. It looks like an Athearn, but AHM/IHC also made one some years ago. [%-)]
EMD sold more of those locomotives to Santa Fe and other roads for freight train duty than what Amtrak had. Amtrak’s F45PH engines were hand-me-downs from other railroads when Amtrak was created in 1971.
That’s a Athearn F45/FP45…A rare find these days.
If it has the metal side frames, I would bet it has the older Athearn motor that is black and has a one peice magnet. The trucks used what they called an “oil lite bushing” that is pressed into the side frames of the trucks. These really ran pretty good and did not require much work to keep them running good, and as far as noise they were not to noisey at all.
Looks like you found a good deal then.
I’d have to agree with the previous 2 posts.
If you plan to turn it into an ATSF F45, it’s good as it is. If you wanted a GN/BN F45, you’d have to get rid of the front pilot, and have it flat with a snowplow.
Not AHM. Those I have. Not metal side frames, and by weight, I almost susect not metla motor either.
