I think we are going to do it this year, primarily for the grandson. One problem, all of my Lionel stuff is in Texas, in storage. We are going down next week to work storage, should bring it back to Kansas.
I am also setting up some G gauge around an outdoor “tree” in the front year. My wife gets crazy with holiday lights.
When I was at my place that I used to rent down in Hilliard, Ohio, I had my Lionel up in my living room with it going around the tree, which I put in one corner. When I got my cats, I moved the Lionel upstairs to my home office where I could close the door to keep the cats out. The loop ended up being in the perfect spot to also put the tree up at the end of the year.

In 2021, I did a video of putting the tree up, which included video of Lionel trains running and the unwrapping and initial run of the original Lionel set.
In the fall of 2023, I moved back to my hometown of Bucyrus to be closer to my parents to help with their health issues. I didn’t get the Lionel running again in time for Christmas that year. But last Christmas in 2024, I did get a video of the Lionel running around the tree in my upstairs home office.
After losing my mom in October 2023 and dad this past February, I purchased my brother’s half of our family’s house from him and moved back to where I grew up. I wanted to put the tree up in the living room, but there are no doors currently to keep my cat Smokey from getting into it, so it’s currently going up in my home office for this year. Unfortunately, I don’t have room in here to set up the Lionel, but next year, it’ll be going around the tree again as well as set up all year.
My wife is absolutely nuts when it comes to Christmas decorations. This year she wanted a train to run around the Christmas tree. I ended up buying a lighted FasTrack oval and a Christmas train. I even found a lighted bridge. Happy wife happy time and I get to buy more trains.
I kinda like how your wife thinks Mark. I’ve had a train under the tree every year for the past 9-10 or so, the last 4-5 alternating between n scale and HO. This year will be HO, 2 concentric ovals running in DCC in opposite directions. I’ve collected a bunch of (battery led) lighted buildings in HO scale over the past 3-4 years from the Dollar store for a measly $1.50 apiece that add nicely to the scene.
AmFlyer Tom, love your layout. Kevin, gotta train those cats
Over 50 years ago I was a Conductor on freight started on the NYC in Indiana, My wife decided she wanted a train running around the Christmas tree. On her own she found an old steam engine I believe from the late 40’s or early 50’s and a few used cars and a caboose. I finally made her an oval track layout on cutout plywood. She ran that train every year mostly around the tree. Some time after 2005 she decided to go to a new battery Christmas train so the old steam engine and the PC GP9 diesel I’d bought for her went into storage. In 2024 she passed away. Lost and looking for something to bring interest back I brought out the old train set. Now retired it wasn’t big enough so I’ve been adding rolling stock and track but found my space restricted so I had a 12x12 barn built. I’m ready to prep it to become the Smith Road Depot. I’ve decided to have 2 gages, an O gage and a HO gage. I’m not planning an extreme layout in scenery, road and such I just like to set back and watch and reminisce of my days on those big beautiful diesels. I’ve gone nuts buying used and new but staying simple. Where this goes depends on how my interests and health runs at 85. I hope she is looking down on what I am going to build. Mary was the love of my life.
we had Lionels under the tree growing up and off and on for years after now its been 6-7 years since we had trains under the tree. I might do it next year with a Lionel super chief set. Or a Z gauge under a mini tree on a table.
jlvetor, welcome to the forum. My wife has an N scale coffee table layout, but in the past has bought second hand large scale trains to run around the tree.
