Who was the Canadian manufacturer of the Proto 1000 Alco RS-11?

I need a set of handrails for a Proto 1000 D&H RS-11. Walthers evidently doesn’t carry parts for this loco as it was a special run by the Canadian manufacturer of Proto 1000.

Any help here appreciated.

Edit: They don’t actually have to be D&H handrails, any set would do, but grey would be preferable.

btw for other info, the prototype canadian equivelent of ALCO is MLW-Montreal Locomotive Works, they made the WP&Y DL-535 3 foot guage engines.

The Canadian manufacturer is Hobbycraft Canada, however, they produced strictly limited numbers of Canadian roads like CN / CP / ON. The D&H units were not produced by Hobbycraft. Parts for the American production runs of LL products “should” be available through Walthers.

They did RS 18’s, not sure if they did any RS 11’s (searched their site and nothing came up). This is their main web site, try to e-mail for the parts: www.hobbycraft.com

Atlas did a D&H RS11. Could that be it.

Hobbycraft has done a lot of variations of the LL Proto 1000 engines. You won’t find many on their website because they are very limited runs and usually sold out very quickly.

Who did the RS 18’s, and were they low nose or only high nose?

I have a Proto D&H RS11.

They all came from Life-Like as Hobbycraft ordered the Canadain Livery on top of the US order.

You guys seem to have gone off on a tangent … in the original post, he’s looking for handrails for a D&H engine - the D&H ENGINES WERE NOT produced by Hobbycraft !!! These engines were produced by / for Lifelike US and Walthers is the sole distributor for parts.

Jay says in his orginal post “Walthers evidently doesn’t carry parts for this loco as it was a special run by the Canadian manufacturer of Proto 1000.” so he is trying to find out the origins which is Hobby Craft Canada, not Life Like/Walthers. That’s my read on it anyway, hence why I have posted what I have. I assume from his post he has already contacted Walthers on this, if not he should do that first, then try Hobby Craft

And the Hobby Craft RS 11/18 handrails should fit regardless of road name.

Ok - for the record, I have two of the D&H Proto 1000 units. The instruction sheet right from the box indicates the following …

Handrails are part #3 ( detail package #2 )

There is no mention of any Canadian connection to these units, someone at Walthers is steering you in the wrong direction - maybe they don’t know and had to come up with an answer of sorts. (?)

An update:

At the time of my original post my info was second hand. my friend, the owner of said RS-11 had called Walthers about the handrails and was told that “some” Canadian co. had made them. Not very helpful. So I inquired here, 'cuz for the life of me I couldn’y remember the name of the Candian distributor of L.L. Proto models, (seem to be losing memory brain cells at a very rapid rate sometimes!)

I have since talked to the very helpful Keith, the “train” repairman at Walthers.

According to him, US road RS-11s were indeed piggybacked on the Hobbycraft RS-10, RS-11 & RS-18 order as they shared the same chassis. They all were shipped from China to Hobbbycraft, the US Road units were then shipped to Baltimore. I gathered that the physical transfer of factory stock and parts did not go so smoothly as they have just recently gotten things sorted out Anyway, there were no parts other than chassis’ in stock for the RS-11. They have one owner’s booklet for the RS-11! Either body parts were never produced for the US-bound units, or they were never shipped from Hobbycraft.

I will call Hobbycraft Sat. or Monday if they’re closed and post back here with whatever I find out for anyone who might someday need some parts for this unit.

Update:

I have spoken to HobbyCraft of Canada and there are no Rs-11 handrails from them. The person I spoke to said they were shipped along with all the othr parts stock from L.L. Baltimore to Walthers but Walthers just hasn’t found them yet. Sounds to me like nobody knows where they are and they’re just passing the blame back and forth.

However, this guy did say that the HobbyCraft RS-18 handrails would fit, but since I’m in the US, I can’t order them! So I’m going to have a friend in Canada get them for me. Boy, what a hassle for a set of handrails.
