Speaking of which how about a cab ride with my young friend Harrison on the Catskill Mountain Railroad’s Alco RS-1?

Thanks for the video on the Catskill Mountain RR. Sad to see all that rail by the side where part of the line was torn up to make a rail-trail. Glad to see that Harrison is still making videos.

The one I miss the most isn’t a steam whistle - although it sounded like one! I grew up across the street from the Minneapolis Northfield & Southern Ry. Their diesels (originally Baldwins and FMs, then later GM units) used Hancock Air Whistles. It was quite a difference the Soo Line took them over and I started hearing hi-hood GP9’s with their single chime BLAT airhorns.

He’s still making videos all right! He’s also been published in “Railpace” magazine and has an article in the June 2025 issue of “Trains” about Quebec’s Sartigan Railway.
Harrison’s an achiever far beyond his years!

Yes. I lost track of his work a little while back. I am pleased for him that he is still around and making videos.

Thank you for the update.

I’ve got a few, Specifically the oddballs. For diesels I quite enjoy older 3 and 5 chime Nathans and Leslies, specifically ones like the RS3L, P5, K5H, P3, S5T, And oddly I like the S55s. For steam I am gonna have to pick SP 4449’s whistle, with 611 following close behind.

Thanks Big Jim! Great to hear from you again about all things N&W!

I saw the article on the Sartigan Railway but I did not make the connection on the author. Now that he has gone professional, I’m guessing he is up against a forum policy about pros possibly overwhelming the forum with videos.

I doubt it. Last week he posted a video about the Catskill Mountain Railroad and that one’s post “Trains” publication. I don’t think he has anything to worry about. However when Harrison posts a video now he doesn’t seem to link it to the Forum anymore so you may be right.

I was always partial to a set of four SD40-2 helpers shoving a coal or slab train up the west slope.

The first time I went to Horse Shoe was in summer 1977. I had left Ohio unexpectedly late, and in those dark days of strictly-enforced 55mph speed limits I didn’t get to the area until long after dark, in the rain, and I had no idea where the actual railroad was. Found the entrance with the gift shop, which of course was long closed, and drove a couple of miles past thinking I could find a view, when…

the night was suddenly full of 645s in Run 8, seemingly going nowhere. Then an enormous fan of golden light burst out far above me, slowly wheeling and turning, indistinguishable as a train going somewhere. I just parked with the flashers on and listened…

On CR 6200- 6300 - 6400 power. But a good 7000 on a local with a heavy train was pure sound.
