Why do they do it?

I have noticed that sometimes the rails seem to hum as a train goes over them. Is there a reason for this?

Possible railgrinder went by?

Sound is only an effect of vibration, and the rails certainly vibrate under the weight of a train. Why do some do it more than others? I would imagine differences in wheel and rail type, speed, and a number of other factors would contribute, including the ground the rail is sitting on. I’m sure other’s here can give you a more reasoned, thought out, researched answer, but that’s my off the cuff thought.

Railgrinder most likely.

Flange contact, maybe?

Don’t know the words?

The overhead catenary will “sing” ahead of a train on former PRR electrified territory.
