In toledo outside of walbridge an 11 year old kid naylor squires was killed when he was struck by a train.one train had cleared and he was struck by another train coming from the other direction.my condolances go to the family and the crew involved in the accident. for more info got to wtol.com or wtvg.com.

Absolutely positively correct. Operation lifesaver should be in every school in the country. Mabee if railroad safty was drilled into kids at an early age we would have a lot less pointless deaths and injuries.
I’ve worked in the newspaper industry as a reporter and later as an exec on the old BN. Let me tell you, the message isn’t getting out about track safety. When I was a reporter, I once talked to the teenaged male driver of a car who pulled out in front of three IC GP7s with 100 cars of coal behind them. He was seriously injured and his girlfriend died at the scene. His response on why he didn’t stop and look? “I never thought any tracks were used these days - I thought trains had disappeared.”
I’d agree - they teach road safety in schools don’t they? So why not railroad safety too? A few simple golden rules could save plenty of lives (such as always assume tracks to be in use, never walk on the right of way, etc). If we can teach them to cross a road safely then we can teach them how to avoid getting hit by a train too, and stop any more tragedies such as this one.
I think it should be taught in the school systems as well, IMO it is just as important as the D.A.R.E. program, possibly even more so. I thnk that it cold be integrated in just as a program like DARE.
I know so far in school i havent learned a work about operation lifesaver, and proabably never will since i am a senior, its sad some people think that trains have dissapeared!!

When I lived in Pennsylvania, driver’s ed. was not required in high school. Twenty years ago, I moved to Delaware(which still doesn’t require it) and insisted that all three of my kids take it. Being a commercial driver, I gave them more training after that. Railroad crossings was definitely one of the subjects!
They should teach rr saftey in drivers ed. I think every student driver should have to watch gorey grade crossing accident movies. I don’t remember one word about trains when I took drivers ed 20 years ago.
Even when I took it five years ago, trains were barely mentioned.[:(]
I agree with the rest of you that railroad safety should be taught better and more often.
