Why was my post deleted?

I posted a link to my checklists on my website. I never have had problems with posts before about information on my website so I am curious why this was deleted?

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who has an answer.

Don’t feel bad, threads get locked and posts get deleted all the time around here.

Stephen,

Which thread are you talking about?

Tom

I suppose, it is just that I would have at least liked to have been emailed as to why is all.

The one called “Checklists for layout planning”

When I went to reply to someone who posted in it I got this.

“Not Found: Forum Not Found The forum you requested does not exist.”

Was just wondering why is all.

As a forum member for 5 months you’re an expert?

You mean this thread?

Yes

Stephen,

When a thread or post is deleted, it’s customary for the originator of the post to receive an explanation from the moderator as to why the post is being deleted. The only time this does not happen is when a post is “daughtered” to another post and the “parent” post is deleted.

To put it another way: When you click the “Reply” button of a certain post in a thread in order to respond to that post or thread, your post is now “daughtered” to that particular post that you replied to. If that post is deleted for whatever reason, your post - even though there may be nothing wrong with its content - is inevitably deleted, too. And, unfortunately, the originator of the deleted post is the only one that receives the explanation for the deletion. The originator of the daughter post does not.

Also, when a post is deleted, there is no “indicator” in the forum software to tell the moderators which posts are actually daughtered to which posts. That means that a few good posts regrettably get “tossed out with the bath water” along with the deleted posts.

But…the good news, Stephen, is that it looks like Chad has found your lost thread and it wasn’t deleted as you originally thought.

And - Sorry, Jeff. Looks like it doesn’t happen “all the time” after all. [:)]

Tom

Stephen,

I’ve had this happen to me before. Every so often the forum server will “time out” after you hit the Post button and give you an error message just like that.

I’ve found that most of the time it will have posted the message after all. However, if for some reason it hasn’t, do the following steps:

  1. Click the “Go back one page” button in your browser to return you to your typed message

  2. Highlight and copy (Ctrl+C) the message you previously type

  3. Click the “Go back one page” button in your browser again to return you to the thread

  4. Click one of the Reply buttons in the thread

  5. Paste (Ctrl+V) your copied typed message in the text box

  6. Click the “Post” button to post your message

Usually it will take the second time. If not, wait a few minutes and try it again until it takes.

Hope that helps…

Tom

Thanks for the explanations guys.

As for timing out I did try it on two different occasions on two seperate days.

But as you observed it is back. Must have been a glitch. It happens.

Working on computers myself I know stuff happens. I appreciate the effort in your responses that you guys put in.

Again, thanks guys

Ok I “THINK” I found the problem. When I retried the link I got in my email it came up an error. So I am thinking that somehow the link got accidently messed up. LOL Oh well stuff happens. Once again thanks for all your help guys.

Margaritaman has a valid point:

I have been happily participating in at least two discussions that were new to me, because I am relatively new, and had them locked with comments like, “same people, same discussions.” In both cases, I had the last post, so the decion and timing seemed personal.

That practice seems abrupt and arbitrary. I emailed the moderators in each case asking why, and received reasonable explanations, each time pointing out that my post had nothing to do with the decision.

But for us new people, the arbitrary locking of posts because a moderator sees a red flag that others may not (there were no flame wars or obviously derisive posts), makes it seem a bit heavy handed.

I’ll put it this way: My experinces here make me an expert on what it looks like for new people. For new people, it looks like posts gets deleted and locked all the time.

I feel it is important to be clear and state that often it is a final post that breaks the camel’s back for us moderators. But that could be because the final post has not advanced the discussion after a succession of predecessors that also have done little or nothing to do so. Or it may be the one statement we know that historically sets similar threads on a bad pathway. And truth to tell, sometimes it is posted by the same person as last time. It’s not as if none of us has any historical sense of the round of topics that come up from time-to-time.

If we lock a thread it is because it has run afoul of one of the policies, or is giving clear signs of full momentum that way. It makes sense to prevent some train wrecks than to stand by and let history repeat itself…which some complainers insist always happens. Quite rightly in many cases.

Usually we’ll try to delete and isolate a post that is noteworthy for being an example of an infraction, but it sometimes isn’t possible. In either case, locking a thread or deleting a post, I believe the mods have an understanding that we try to offer an explanation that means something to the author, even if the author is not likely to agree or be happy with our decision. I can recall one occasion so far when I personally have received an email/pm asking if the member’s post was the one that locked the thread because the timing seemed suspect. On that occasion I assured him that it was not necessarily his post, but the entire series that had kept the post off topic.

The timing is sometimes regrettable, but the forum does have to be helped along to satisfy our host’s wishes and policies.

Finally, if you find that you object to any treatment by the moderators, whether to you personally or to someone whom you feel has been hard done by, please do as Bergie keeps asking us to do…use the “report abuse” link and alert him and us to the problem as yo
