Wilkes-Barre railroad yards

I am searching for any photos and drawings (accurate) of the railroad yards in Wilkes-Barre,Pa. I am trying to model these yards in N scale. I need info on the PRR,LV,CNJ and D&H.Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try contacting the ARHS? They might have val (Valuation) maps for the area, or be able to put you in touch with someone who does.

Try contacting Penn State library or go to Penn State virtual library. I got a fascinating book from Penn State called “Set Up Running” a biography of steam engineer named Oscar Orr who worked on the PRR Central divsion. Also the PRR Railroad mueseum in Altoona may help. You also may need to narrow or define your seach better a specific time frame would help. Also found this site that has books related to the railroad industry and PRR in particular

You also might try Morning Sun’s Trackside Around book series. I found Trackside Around Scranton very helpful.

How about a website dedicated to Northeastern Railroading with a Pennsylvania emphasis? And, over 15,000 prototype photographs to boot!

You’ll see a couple Wilkes-Barre links, more than the railroads you were looking for, and even a page dedicated to the Wilkes-Barre & Hazelton Electric Railway.

Try Google Maps or Google Earth. You might be able to get a pretty good satellite map of the area you’re looking for.

Try Steamtown National Park. They have tons of info on surrounding railroads. If you want, I can look around for you at the hobby shop down there, since I live about 45 minutes away.

KlinkyMobster - just a quick sidenote… What Hobby shop is down there? My wife’s family is from Scranton, and I’ve only seen a Lionel dealer. Any good hobby stores in that area? I’m from 3 hours south, so I don’t know that area very well.

There’s an excellent hobby store across the street from the lionel dealer about half a block down, right next to that big hotel they just put in on Lackawanna Ave. there is also one in Wilkes-Barre called the Train Shoppe. I’ll get you exact addresses if you want. The one in Scranton is definetly worth going to, the owner is a great guy.

speaking of steamtown, isn’t there a model of the yards itself in one of the building in HO ?

I’m not sure if there is an HO model of the yards, but I know that in a seperate building in Dunmore they have a whole HO model of the city of Scranton, with steam and diesels. Admission is free, and they rent the space from the Gertrude Hawks chocolates store, so you can get a little treat too!

Thanks to all who have given suggestions but I am still running into dead ends.I e-mailed a message to the ARHS once before and I never got the courtesy of a reply of any sort.Oh well, I will keep trying.

The train store in Scranton, down the street from Steamtown on Lackawanna Avenue is simply called Scranton Hobbies, unless they have since changed the name. I went to my high school class reunion back in 1995 in upstate New York and on the way there, stayed in the Lackawanna Hotel; it is the old DL&W passenger station-turned hotel. I also visited Steamtown while I was there - - a great trip!
