Will airport style security come to trains?

The DHS secretary seems to think it is a possibility.

Never happen. There’s no funding and there’s no real threat. Now the NYC subway would be a much better target, but there’s no way on earth they could possibly implement airport style screening.

When the TSA sets up shop in Libby Montana, it’s time to move to another country.

On the other hand, a comment like that will turn congressional republicans into pretzels. Between trying to be budget hawks and homeland security, they can’t win.[banghead]

Here we go again…

There are occasional references to AMTRAK by the media talking heads on TV News programs.

The threat of security escalation seems to be a tool used by Pols to justify Security as a ‘growth’ industry.

Political Correctness seems to dictate that ‘WE’ watch the mouse hole;

while the mice are busy out of sight.

Zardoz seems to have the right idea! [:-,] [tup]

If your only tool is a hammer, pretty soon all your problems look like nails.

Janet Napolitano said:

“Terrorists are going to continue to probe the system and try to find a way through. I think the tighter we get on aviation, we have to also be thinking about going on to mass transit or to trains or maritime.”

This is indeed a very fertile federal growth industry. Just think of all the opportunities to make us safer. It won’t stop until we are all waiting in lines.

The only true defense against terrorists is a concerned citizenry the can recognize when something is ‘not normal’ and take the necessary actions to defeat the threat. If we travel like sheep we deserve anything that happens.

Terrorists were defeated by concerned travelers in Flight 93, the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber incidents…

Implementing airport style screening would pretty much defeat the purpose of the NYC subway system. There are some technologies that would be more applicable to subway security, but the best bet is improving intelligence.

One difference is that rail passenger equipment could probably absorb a lot more damage than an aircraft, so the screening would theoretically easier.

It is true that J.N. did not say she would use airport style screening for rail. Here is a piece that dances all over the head of a pin to make that very point, as if it mattered:

Obviously, she sees rail security as needing more attention. I am sure she can come up with something equally obnoxious that is specially tailored for rail.

I’m waiting for the interstate checkpoints like toll booth where we will have to go through security.

I’m going to say something very political, and it may result in the thread being locked.

This country was founded on freedom that led to a rebellion against England being in control in the 16 and early 1700,s. We wanted freedom from persecution and had the guts to go against those who were in control at the time. That resulted in the Revolutionary War that set us free from tyranny.

What we are seeing today is an egerious erosion of our rights by our own government. That’s not right because they were elected to serve those who elected them and protect those rights.

TSA has gone wildly ot of control, and we are now treated like sheep because of them and their unconstituional methods.

Enough said.

Ya know, it’s Thanksgiving.

Can’t we give this crap a rest for a few hours? Guess nothing is sacred anymore.

HEAR HEAR!!!

Without a doubt the most intelligent post made on this thread.

Would you people let it go already???

“You people”?

Did I stutter?

The only way airport style security would work for Amtrak is to close all the Amshack type platforms and have stops in only major cities. That would kill Amtrak since a good chunk of passengers on long distance trains board at small stops.

As far as transit, it would not be feasible to practice airport style security. Imagine how long you would have to wait on the NYC subway or WMATA at rush hour if you had to go through metal detectors, backscatter imagining systems, etc. People would suddenly find that it was quicker to drive instead of taking public transportation.

There is a lot of “job justification” and job creation at work. What I mean is that once airports are pretty well secured, some folks would then be out of jobs, and less funding for studies, trial programs, etc, would be available. If you want to keep people employed and keep your funding the same or get more, you will want to tackle new areas.

Came in 5x5 here OM!

Perhaps the meaning of the Holiday is lost upon them? You would the turkey or Boones Farm would have mellowed them out for a while.

I guess it is time for one of these then…
