Well will they ever bring one through Ohio? The reason why I bring this subject up is because of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKB8I0wMoHo. This is not my video. I believe this video was in Kirkwood Missouri, not that far from Ohio. Also, back on September 19, 2009 I heard about that UP Heritage C&NW SD70ACe #1995 came through Fostoria Ohio. I want to know if that was exactly true or not?
If someone who works for Norfolk Southern and happens to read this, Can you make Heritage Units commerating Retired Railroads and Merged Railroads? Hint: (PRR).
Never heard of the UP heritage units anywhere near Ohio or even away from UP rails, so Kirkwood, MO, might as well be North Platte, Ohio-wise.
NS seems to do minimal things to salute the heritage of the predecessors. I would hope that if they ever take this step and paint heritage schemes, they would look a little more authentic than the schemes UP came up with.
About fifteen years ago 3985 was in Nashville. Haven’t heard of it leaving UP rails since, although it may have.
The NS heritage steam was in dire need of heavy overhaul when the program was scrapped (along with the specialized spare parts needed to complete the repairs.) I believe that 1218 is effectively gutted, and was restored cosmetically just enough to allow her to be placed on display. Since nothing is impossible, I will simply pigeonhole operation of 611 and 1218 under their own power as extremely unlikely.
The NS executive F units are in Southern Cresent green and cream colors. Very handsome. Saw them in Altoona. These are the only heritage units NS has as far as I know.
Although they turned out to be a public relations bonanza for Union Pacific, a prime reason for the existence of the Heritage Fleet was for trademark protection. Consequently, I find it unlikely that any of the other Class 1’s will do something similar.
UP has done the same thing with some of the rolling stock as well. Also according to this months trains"Pride of the fleet" pg 18. as the engines come for major overhauls they will lose their special features.
As for NS their buisness train is first class and I hope the 4610 stays in Southern colors.CSX 2667 lost its seaboard paint.
UP has ran Heritage units into Ohio before, but I doubt it’ll happen again. If it does, it won’t be anytime soon.
The 1982 (MoPac) Heritage Unit made an appearance on Q131 and Q132 back in late 2006. Q131 and Q132 are St. Louis (Rose Lake) to Detroit trains (I believe). Many railfans lined up and caught this thing while it was around.
The other instance was when NS ran UP 1988 (the Katy) Heritage unit south out of Cincinnati on a rack-attack (I forget the symbol). It went as far as Chattanooga. From there, it was returned to Union Pacific rails. Many railfans caught this too. Some searching on Railpictures.net or rrpicturearchives will get you photographic evidence of these happenings.
As for the 1995 passing through Fostoria - NO, it didn’t happen. If it had happened, I would’ve seen it, because I was out there in NW Ohio near CSX all weekend. Secondly, there are NO photos of it, and I’ve heard NO other discussion of this. Someone is a liar.
As for NS Heritage Units - not very likely that the plans of making them will actually go through, but there has been talk. The closest thing they have to a Heritage unit now, is the NS 4610. It’s a GP59 dressed in the green Southern Rwy paint scheme. They also have the NS 34 and 38 Geometry test-bed engines decorated in maroon N&W paint, but I don’t consider those actual locomotives.
NS doesn’t own the rights to the predecessor paint schemes from the Conrail side, only the N&W and Southern (and their predecessor). So, NS can’t do a PRR or NYC or LV or EL heritage unit.
WHOA! Since when was Kirkwood Missouri not on the Union Pacific? Kirkwood Missouri is on the Union Pacific’s Jefferson City Subdvision! Also, Kirkwood is about 450 miles West of Ohio…
thats not what was said Reread the statement he said that those units never been in ohio so kirkwood might as well be in north platte. ( not word for word but the way i see it) .
I have a stupid question for anyone with the right answer( like i know the differance) Just what are the heritage units for UP? or better yet why would they be heritage units? ok so i have 2 questions and now make it 3. what make and model are they?
Sorry to the original poster for this but if I may I like to broaden this out a bit . How about BNSF or CSX what is thier engines. I dont know so i ask.
Those are the SD70Aces that are painted up in a fancy Western Pacific, Rock Island, CNW, Katy, DRG&W, and SP paint scheme, (and perhaps one or 2 more I’m forgetting at the moment).
BNSF doesn’t have anything like that at the moment, and CSX has maybe one or 2 locmotives left in Chessie paint (serving as remote platforms) if they still exist. They did have a locmotive in faded origninal C&O paint, but that was finally repainted in their current scheme.
NS has the southern-painted GP59, and that was actually just repainted within the past few years, so it should be like that for awhile. Although I think the real heritage engiens are the old Gp38s and such where you can see the Southern lettering and gold stripe showing through the black paint…
Chessie 3802 is at the B&O museum in Baltimore.9121 and 9122 were taken to the cumberland shops.Wabash we saw a nice ns and a bnsf pull 17 k on the nkp near leipsic ohio yesterday.
That’s interesting and I wasn’t aware of that. I thought a modern locomotive painted up with a EL scheme would be something to see. My all-time favorite paint scheme.
Something in Virginian colors would be interesting.
I certainly did not intend to say that Kirkwood is in North Platte or anything else, I was only saying that if you’re in Ohio, Kirkwood might as well be North Platte, you’re a long ways from UP tracks, even though they’re a lot closer to Ohio than they used to be.
