Williams trains - Golden Memories vs. Traditional Line

Based on good reviews on the board and being new to the hobby and looking to add some more trains to my collection at more moderate prices, I’m starting to develop an interest in some of the Williams products. So, I’ve been poring over their website trying to learn more about the product. I’ve sent for their catalog, but haven’t received it yet. So, my question may be answered in the catalog.

From the website, I know that Golden Memories (GM) are reproductions of Lionel postwar trains, and Traditional Line (TL) carries more road names.

Looking through the website, it appears some of the items are unique to either one category or the other. But, some of the items seem to have the same product description and look the same in the photos/drawings for both GM and TL except for road names and road numbers. To further confuse me, sometimes the list price is the same, and sometimes the list price is different.

Examples are:

semi-scale GG-1 (same price)

S-2 Turbine (TL $20 more)

F3 (GM)/F7 (TL) (large price difference - the F3 A-A is the same price as the F7 A-B-A, so need to add the cost of the F3 B)

I’d appreciate any input from those of you with first-hand experience with the GM vs. TL products (particularly the ones I mentioned). I’m sure I’ll be happy with either, just would like to make an informed decision.

The traditional line is comprised of post war reproductions that have different paint schemes not offered by Lionel, as well as some offerings that are either scale or unique to Williams. All of Williams trains are super nice. I own several.

Do yourself a favor - don’t order trains directly from Williams. JusTrains has much lower prices and free delivery.

Another note about ordering Williams trains, find a local Williams dealer and not a hobby shop as I get some of the best prices on Williams trains thru a local Williams dealer. I go to his house to pick-up the items. For example the current True Blast sound sound system cost me $24.00, catalog price $29.95.

Bought a Williams GP-9 a couple of years ago for only $124.00, has True Blast 2 diesel sound system in it, or a pair of GP-9’s with horn only in the unpowered unit for $200.00. Paid only $400.00 for the F-7 ABA (one A unit powered only, B unit has sound system with departure announcement)El Capiton set of Santa Fe with six passenger cars, nine units for $400.00 was almost a steal!

Thanks for the information. I understand how Williams sets up their two lines now. I’ll be ordering some of their products from either Ma and Pa Junction or Just Trains.
