The PRR’s Wilmington Shops modified a wreck damaged GG-1 back in the late 50s or early 60s, cuting one end off. The Traction Motor Cooling Blower was reloacated from the removed hood to the mid-portion of the locomotive.
Blanking off the open end of the locomotive was a flat plate steel wall, and an air shute mounted to discharging downward toward the rails. This was used to blow the snow off the rail & switches in the Loco Shop’s yard.
I talked to a modeler on-line who said he saw a picture of the unit in a back issue of Trains magazine. Does anyone recall this interesting locomotive or the photo? Can they identify the month & year of this issue? Can anyone scan this photo and email it to me?
I really want to model this unit, as I am modeling the history of the Wilmington Shops in HO scale, and it wouldn’t be complete without a representative of this unique piece of equipment.
