Interesting that it was the History Channel. that co-sponsored the trip. Are they trying to tell us to hurry before Amtrak goes the way of the DoDo bird?
I remember some years ago where a comparison of a 747 and and early Amtrak long distance train was compared the 747 used more fuel on take off than the three FP 40’s would burn for the entire trip from Chicago to Seattle round trip. I for one can’t see for the life of me why people are in such a big hurry today. Remember traveling on a CN passenger train some years ago and while sitting in the lounge car listened to a man telling how his company insisted their employees traveling at company expense must travel by train wherever possible. I have been trying to remember the name of the company and his comment that their sales people out performed the competition by nearly three to one ratio. If it was true would it still be true today. Personally I avoid flight unless traveling overseas where their is no other choice. One other question why is it so difficult to rent a car when arriving in a city by train instead of by plane? They don’t want to pick you up at the station and they consider you some type of second class citizen if you arrive by train. Anyone else have similar experience?
I believe the answer to your first question resides in your statement in your second sentence, “second class citizen if your arive by train.” The kiosks for the one-way car rental phones probably are viewed as too costly and an overkill for “most” of us who travel by train. Just my opinion, of course - based on more that “gut” reaction - for I’ve seen it time in and time out - no where at all to arrange for a rental car, much less hotel pick up by their “airport” vehicles. One exception is a Residence Inn in Kansas City, MO (Union Hill location) - if you happen to have their phone number - they will send the courtesy van to pick you up … nice touch - but oh so rare.
So in answer to your second question, “yes,” been there, done that …
