Winnipeg leaders push for change to light rail
Winnipeg should look closer to home for a transport priority. Since Jefferson Lines cut off service between Grand Forks and Winnipeg, there is no connection between VIA and Amtrak, or, for that matter, between the midwestern Canadian and American surface transportation systems. Right now Winnipeg-Grand Forks is a 150-mile gap in an otherwise continuous surface journey between Churchill, MB and the Mexican-Guatemalan border.
What wasteful insanity. Busses are the way to go.
That figures coming from Matty? Busses just DON’T get it. riders would rather ride light rail rather that cramped bumpy riding busses.
Winnipeg has a bus manufacturer plant as the reason why they have been addicted to buses for the benefit of their local manufacturing business. But its getting to the point when the city is large enough to have light rail since buses could only handle a limited capacity compared to a rail transit train. Canadas capital, Ottawa is learning its lesson the hard way. Light rail was rejected in previous decades since is would of been an eyesore to the nation
s capital. Downtown Ottawa is now chaotic with endless buses crawling that its faster to walk across downtown rather than standing on one of their turtle speed buses. Finally a new light rail route is expecting to operate sometime in 2018 but at a cost over $2 billion CAD for about eight miles. The sooner for long range planning and for more fuel efficiency then the more economical light rail will be more suitable even at a city less than 500 million if the tracks are already on the ground.

I like your idea, Bill. Also, my friend, Al Papp agrees with some of these ideas.
Reading between the lines of some of the opinions expressed in the Winnipeg media, one can get the impression that this "debate"might be a stall to enable selected developers to get parcels of land assembled before final route selection takes place.
