Wire connectors question

I’m not really satisfied with Radio Shack’s crimping type lock connector. They are not that easy to pull apart in close space without yanking a wire in the locomotive. Also, if I’m using a trailing battery car, I’d like something more quick release for the tether.

I’m thinking more along the lines of a screw device or a male/female plug like on a stereo headphones or something like that. Here’s one option…

This would be perfect except it is for 18-22 gauge. What if I had a 14 gauge wire that I want to connect to an 18 gauge wire?

Any advice/tips appreciated.

David, it says they make them for wire as big as 8AWG.

For tethers, I take individual loose connector pins and solder them to the wires, then cover all but the business end of the male pin with shrink tubing. It’s very compact, doesn’t come loose by itself, but will pull loose in a derailment. You probably need two wires, so you could just use a male and a female on each side.
