Where was The National Railway Historical Society when Memphis Union Station with its Beaux-Arts architecture and well appointed interior was demolished in 1968? So much for preserving and restoring. Now Memphis is left with a non-descript building that belies its name “Grand Central Station”. MUS could have become an art museum or concert hall if not a transportation centre or railway museum.
If Amtrak service returns to Roanoke, will the train stop here?
Too bad that the ex-N&W station is not being restored for passenger service as service would be restored to Roanoke.
ANY Station that can be saved and preserved is important to our National Heritage. Like most all stations in Virginia, I assume Roanoke would have been built and signed as a racially segregated station. This distinction should also be part of the Restoration. However offensive it may be to most of us, it WAS “our history” and should be accurately preserved as such. “Revisionist History” is INACCURATE history.
