I am looking for plan ideas for a work bench with the train above. Space is limited so working on the train would need to be under the train. Any direction about publications or articles that might give me some direction would be helpfull.
I build my layouts high enough (50+ inches) that a regular desk or table fits underneath the layout. I have a rolltop desk I use for a model building workbench, but I have also used an old dining room table.

I use an old 27" high desk with three drawers on one side of the knee space. My HO scale DCC test track rums across the 48" back of the desk top. The desk is mounted on casters, so that it can be stored under the layout, and pulled out sufficiently, when needed. I also have several other 38" high old wooden filing cabinets, that are used for permanent support of the layout, and have pull-out drawers, or shelves for storage. Bob Hahn

I have seen layouts that have a work top on drawer slides that pull out with tool and storage under them. When not needed it slides under the layout with about 12 to 15 inches of headroom over it and a curtain on a shower rod to hide it away. Florescent lights can be just behind the layout fascia and power strips under it.

I’m currently working this same issue. My layout shares space with the sewing room (what a waste of space there), so I’m trying to work in a place to store my tools, kits ,and parts and a work surface on one side of the room along with a sewing area on the other. The railroad will be above work area. Way back in April 72, Jack Work had an article on his workbench. It looks like an excellent and easy to build design. I’m using it as inspiration.
I’ve dedicated an old computer table with a sliding keyboard shelf. Tacking or bonding scraps of wood around the four edges of the keyboard shelf creates a low workspace that confines small parts from rolling onto the floor, and let’s incomplete work be partially sheltered when the keyboard shelf is closed under the tabletop.
