Workbenches…not always the most glorious part of model railroading, but as crucial as good trackwork and wiring. I am keen to see the space folks have for building, painting, and repairing. Mine is a bit too small and an area for improvement, but at least it has a view and tucks away when not in use.
And it tucks away nicely beneath the layout from the looks of it as well.
When i find it, ill share it. Currently buried under several unfinished protects
My workspace is a carryover from my old layout and my previous home. The layout did not come to the new home, but the spray booth and the workbench did.
A bit more has been done since these pictures, in fact the benchwork for the first third of the layout is coming along nicely.
The paint booth, magazine library, work bench, mini fridge, utility sink and half the main staging yard all in roughly 12 x12.
Need to take some more pictures, a lot has been done since these.

My Workbench is an old Wickes DIY ‘Workmate’ Frame, but with a Ply Top of 12mm x 30"W x 20"D.
I can fold this up and usually find somewhere to stow it away.
My Spray Booth sits on top with the Extractor Hose out of the Window - when required.
Whilst it is small and always getting in the way, it is better than nothing and I’m grateful I have it.
It is another means to Model Railroading Fun.
Paul.
P.S. the DC Wiring is only temporary - but it does work.
Sheldon, that is an awesome set up. It looks like a great space to get things done for the layout. I envy the room you have for it.
I envy all the workbenches. I’m currently using the dining room table. The wife isn’t very happy about it. However, I’ll soon have a space in the basement.

I won’t post pictures from inside my house on a public internet forum, but I will say that my workbench is not in the layout room. I work in a space that has good ventilation (not the basement, where the layout is) and I don’t want to spread dust from filing and sanding around the layout space.
Current location of my workbench:
Thermopolis is to the left beyond the back of the workbench, and Worland is in the opposite direction to the right.
It’s moved around over the last several years as the layout has progressed.
2022:
This is now the area between Douglas and Greybull
2020:
Shobon is now to the left, and Wind River Canyon extends from the back wall well past the camera.
I understand and agree about the work are being separate from the layout. When completed, my work space will be largely walled off from the layout space. The paint booth is vented to the outdoors, and there is other forced ventilation in that area.
I have plans to make a removable cover system for the staging yard that is in the workshop area to keep excess dust off the trains but allow then to be easily accessed for operating sessions.
At my old house, the workshop was in a completely different building from the layout. Don’t really have that luxury here, but, I have almost 500 sq ft more layout space. So I will live with “semi isolated” from the layout space.
The space in the upper right corner is the workshop. It will be largely “walled off” by the layout backdrop.

Casey, thank you for the kind words. The layout and workshop will effectively fill the whole 1500 sq ft basement when complete. Benchwork under construction, more photos soon.
Sheldon
Looking forward to seeing the construction, Sheldon!
I have a split setup. The train and building workshop is upstairs. My house came with a room that had been converted to a very small computer room, complete with cabinets and a desk. That’s now where I work on trains and models.
Down by my layout I have a small table in chair in the next room over, but that is currently buried.
Here’s the workshop.
Here’s a couple pics of my workbenches and my paintbooth. The workbenches are designed to be moved and will reside under the benchwork when not in use.
Welcome to the forum, LouN! Nice setup for your working area!
When the New Orleans school upgraded desks, a bunch of these old oak teachers’ desks were replaced. Even though we were living in a tiny apartment at the time, I took one home. It traveled with us through various moves, and it ended up now in my layout room (guest bedroom). Not much on the desk here, but by this evening it will be covered.
Welcome LouN
