is anyone here building a layout, even though noone’s ever gonna see it?
I am building a layout, although some people might see it. It is “on hold” until next week when I finish up with a project I am working on for a local railroad museum (pics to be posted as soon as I finish and can snap a roll or two!) I do hope people will see that…
My home layout is currently a small (eight square feet) switching layout based on the Sacramento Belt Line, operated by the Sacramento Northern and Central California Traction railroads, which served various industries on the perimeter of downtown Sacramento until the mid-sixties. It varies in its state of doneness (I have a tendency to change my mind about what I wanted to do) but right now it’s basically semi-decorated but not quite ready for prime time except in a couple of spots.
I’m building a movable shelf style layout thats 8ft by 14in. Its HO scale industrial switching and based on some obscure point on Puget Sound so i’m putting in a few large buildings as well as a small boat building place. Its not really modelled on a port but rather an industrial area set near the water. Its set in the late 80’s to early 90’s meant to represent part of a small shortline that is probably on its last legs. Power will be some battered old Geeps clearly showing signs of neglect along with the right of way that shows every indication of being abandoned in the not too distant future.
I guess that theme sounds kinda depressing for rail fans but i think rustic locomotives and tracks buried in weeds add a little bit of character and give my modelling skills a bit of a work out. Also i take the train to work into the city most days and along the way there are a few places featuring abandoned tracks and old industrial buildings that have long since ceased producing rail traffic. I guess some people are inspired by what they see. All track and turnouts are handlaid code 55 and 75.
I am building a 22’ X 23’ layout that I have been working on for the past two years. It will be on the layout at the NMRA regional convention in Glendale CA in September. I hope that people will come and see it. I only have about 10% of the scenery done, so the benchwork, wiring, etc. can be viewed.
my layout is 50% complete and if no one can see or doesn’t want to see it , does not bother me as long i can live long and see it everyday.
I’m building my layout for me. My son is helping some and my wife and daughter stop in once in awhile. I have two nephews who stop in every now and then but that’s about it. If someone else gets to see it that’s great. But my intention is to have something for me to do.

I’ve been working on the San Juan Southern RR for over two years now and I don’t think any model railroader has seen it except for some photos. I don’t know any modelers that live close by. In fact I don’t know many RR modelers at all. Mostly folks I’ve met on the forums and the guys at the LTS.

I’m going 23X13 and hope to double-deck someday. It’s been on hold because of:
- small-time commercial HO locomotive project
- trying to get a new Ghz-range junkyard computer up and running (Windows is hosed; no wonder the guy tossed it!)
- Working 15 hours a day at 2 jobs, plus drive, eating, and clean-up time. Trying to figure out when to sleep.
One job ends today, so I should have a little more time to get 1 and 2 done.
I just completed the base L-girder benchwork on my new RR (Santa Fe, to be set somewhere in New Mexico). I have about 7’x9.5’ in a spare bedroom to work with, so it’s U-shaped, with room for stacked loops and ‘mountains’ on the left, the grades back to ‘level’ ground across the back (and a nice canyon with a long tressel bridge across the window to keep it accessable [:D]), and a yard on the right. Track plan will be a folded dogbone with the loops stacked in the ‘mountain’, and I plan on putting a biggish staging yard below the left and back benchwork. I can pick up some more length for the yard by adding a couple of feet of surface that can be folded down for access to the closet in the room and the drop-down attic stairs in the same corner. Or I may put a removable bridge across the entrance to the aisle to give me a second mainline run. Haven’t gotten that far in the planning yet.
And not a whole lot of folks will ever see it, I guess. Some friends maybe, and whatever pictures I put up in Webshots as it progresses. I do it for fun, and I do it for my own mental health and relaxation.
im building a 10’ x 11’ layout, have all the bechwork done and about half the roadbed laid down, i dont care if anyone ever sees it, thats what my modules are for [:D]

I’ve almost finished preparing my detached garage (my wife is calling it the train shed) for the layout. It will take up a good portion of the 25’x36’ space. I can’t wait to fini***he room part and start the train part.
