Think I’ll build a few of those ‘working’ volcanoes and stage a huge natural disaster, with the trains fleeing the erupting volcano. Unfortunately I model the caboose era, so the conductors and rear brakemen are going to have a tough time of it.
I can’t worry about that. My underground shelter is still full of ammunition (to fend off the neighbors), cigarettes (the post apocalypse currency), and canned goods that I gathered in anticipation of Y2K.
Hmmm…I’ve wondered about the Mayan calendar and the world coming to an end…doesn’t it really mean the Mayan world is coming to an end? My casual observations tell me their calendar was a few thousand years optimistic.
Anyway…
I can’t be much wittier than the fine comments expressed already, so I’ll just say what I’ve done.
I’ve relocated the bean processing plant to a better location and have prepared the plywood for scenery and ground cover. I’ve been building the shells of buildings to serve as mock ups and will go back and detail them later.
I’ve gotten the bug to work on the layout again, so I’ve been fortunate enough to take the 2 weeks off work ove the holidays, beginning the 24th, to work hard on projects.
If I’m not too busy running for my life before then…
A guy stands on a city street holding a sign “BE READY - THE WORLD ENDS AT NOON TODAY”. As noon approaches he counts down 5-4-3-2-1, then cringes and covers his head. A minute later, he looks around, seeing that nothing has changed, he starts dancing around. “Welcome to the new WORLD” he shouts.
Well I think I am going to make another epic movie.[8D] It will be called Unstoppable III.
This time Captain Kirk returns to earth using Time Warp technology to try and save the world from what the Mayan’s declare will be the end.[:O] Taking a page from “Back To The Future” he and Scotty retrofit a powerful steam engine that has been lying idle in a museum for years.
In order to take advantage of free special effects, can anyone tell me exactly what time the end will occur? I want to be sure the trains are running and the camera’s rolling at that exact time. With any luck the video equipment will follow me to the netherworld where we can all enjoy it on the big screen TV in the trainroom in the sky. Popcorn and [B] included.[(-D]
Cecil, if I may address you so informally, the exact time of the end of the world is Friday, December 21, 2012 at 11:11:11 AM (UTC time). Here is a link to the official countdown timer which I suggest you keep handy in planning any remaining model railroading activities:
Note that the 11:11:11 a.m. time is going by Universal time, set at Greenwich in the U.K. Here in Minnesota that works out to 6:11:11 am.
Oddly enough, the recent the Mayans ended their calendar that day was because on that day, the sun rises directly in the center of the Milky Way galaxy (as viewed from Earth), which only happens once every 26 million years. So…if something happens it would be at sunrise, but sunrise doesn’t happen at the same time everywhere…??
I’m going to sell my leftover Midwest cork roadbed. That would be a good currency after the apocalypse. Come to think of it, I should sell it right now. It’s like having the last Wonka Bar!
And you’ll know it’s a not so better place when you find out that the paint is out of stock and the Heavenly Decal Company, the only makers of the decals you need, has gone out of business.
