Would you be interested in this new forum. . .

I’m looking for feedback about possibly adding a new forum. It would be geared toward those “finds” outside of typical hobby shops. An example would be the Homies figures or large-ish scale vehicles at Wal-Mart, birdhouses that would work as buildings found at a hardware store, etc. etc.

I don’t have a name planned but it would be something like “Now in stores” or “Non hobby shop finds” and I’d hope to have the posts expire after 30-45 days (since a lot of this stuff is either seasonal or out temporarily).

Would you be interested in such a forum? Would you participate?

Feedback is welcome!

Rene

The name of this new forum should be… “Unlikely Treasures.” I think it is a good idea especially since the nearest hobby shop that carries G scale-esque materials is 50 miles away.

I have found several thinks that are adaptable to G scale. I am always looking for construction equipment and near scale parts. The “seasonal idea” is also a good one.

I would participate…also, for unlikely things that can be adapted as parts etc that can be found in places like walmart.

Might I take this time to lobby for a layout section where people would post pics of their layout and information? The Pics would be held off site and pic-linked. There is a current post in this General section on sharing layout pics that might support the contention.

It sounds good to me. So far all of the buildings around my track are either bird houses or bird feeders. We almost got a light house my Wife found at the Christmas Tree Shop. She thinks it is pretty close to scale (if it is in the background anyway).

One vote for yes.

I think it would be a GREAT addition to the forum, I also feel that a GOOD name may be “USE-ABLE” or "USE-FUL " ITEMS.
Good Luck,
Ron

I agree that it would be a great idea.

I’m guilty as charged for haunting all the stores looking for stuff to use. Go for it.

Rene, I have a page on my URL dealing with this very issue:
http://www.trainweb.org/toenailridge/articles.html
& a small article coming up in a future GR mag on the same idea.
You could call the Forum “Lateral Thinking” or “Outside the Square”
Count me in.

I think this would be kinda like Bman’s You Made what out that or something like that. Sure what the heck.

yes i would!

A forum just for me? Why thanks, Rene! I am the self proclaimed King of finding non hobby store items for use on the RR. Garden shops, Wally World, Home depot, thrift stores and yard sales ARE my hobby shops.

Why not call it “outside the box”?

Feedback has been positive! I’ll have Erik Bergstrom set it up (don’t know the timing. . .stay tuned on that). I really like the Cap’n’s suggestion of “Unlikely treasures.” Thanks for the ideas!

Rene,

Since everything is railroad/railway/garden related how about a name related to one or both. It seems like people like “outisde the box” type of a name so here are some more suggestions for a name:

Outside the Depot
Off Track
De-railed Finds
Off the beaten path

Have fun with the name.

about deleating the past posts… i know if you found somthing on sale the deal isn’t any good after 30 days, but i like to read about what people have came up with for non hobby store stuff.

That would be great! I am new to this site and to garden trains. I agree any help in finding items that would work would be great!

their is a lot of information on these forums ,about the garden rail roads, their are some pictures that people put here , if you don’t know , ask ,some one will try and help you . BEN

I have no time for hobby shops and I can’t understand why fair dinkum (for real0 Garden railway people would go there, for the life of me i cannot understand why people would haunt these places.

This is an outdoor activity and you should be spending more time at the local landscapers, quarry, heavy tool hiring places and nursaries (plants not kids).

These peole who spend a lot of time in hobby shops are just a mob of sissies and gunnas (a gunna is one who is going to do this and that and does nothing much at all)as far as i am concerned

Oh, come on, Ian…tell us what you REALLY think!

Hey Phil,

He does that regularly, ever since he bought that MTS system at a HS, HS have been on the “F…orget it!” list. [;)][8)][;)][:)][:)][:)]

Rene,

That’s a splendid idea!

Good deals are found in very unlikely places, as long as one has a bit of imagination and can see the different applications for every day goodies.

I would love to see a forum like this…I hate to shop and hardly ever venture into WalMart or Michael’s except at Christmas…but if I knew there was something useful for my layout I might just ‘pop’ in to have a look.
