WPF - Independence Day Edition, July 3-5, 2015

I’ll give kicking off WPF a try again (after checking carefully not to duplicate anyone else’s work [swg] )

Got a few pics from hanging around Carbon Junction, just south of Durango, RR East. Here’s the eastbound Houston-Portland Zephyr getting wound up for the run down to Grants and thence east.

Here a local on the narrowgauge main to Chama pass CJ Tower.

Later, we caught the eastbound New Mexico Express on its way to Santa Fe passing the tower, led by Alco DL-535E #60.

I did a Re motor on an old Rivarossi 0-6-0

Replacing the open frame motor with a can motor

Use a double universal drive shaft from Micro Mart

and installed a Wow sound decoder into a Round House Short Vandy tender

Here’s a video of it running

Last weekend I went to Tyrone, PA to catch some NS action. I even got to see a rare power move westbound!

Good morning Mike and the rest of the crew from sunny Northeast Ohio. Great pictures to start the weekend.

Managed to get some stuff off the workbench this week.

Got the Tichy Covered Hopper Conversion car painted and decaled this week. Car was painted with Model Masters Silver with a few drops of Green Paint along with Scalecoat II Reading Green for the extension, lettered with kit supplied decals. The Andersons purchased ex-Wabash Panel side hoppers, added an extension and canvas top for shipping grain from Maumee, OH to the export docks in Toledo, OH.

In the 1970’s the Frisco rebuilt and modernized their 50’s era PS1 boxcars by removing the roofwalk, lowering some ladders and repainting and renumbering the cars. This is an Intermountain 40’ PS1 Boxcar kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Oddballs decals.

The Nickle Plate along with the C&O and Erie received some 1937 AAR Boxcars equiped with a Viking Roof. Luckily Des Plaines Hobbies had some Viking Roofs made which I purchased and applied to an IMWX 1937 AAR Boxcar Kit. Car is painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Microscale Decals.

Thanks for looking!

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Great to see WPF is off to a good start. …

Michael (Motley) … Your fireworks photo is very impressive.

Mike L … I like the tower.

TX Terry … Nice work in the Rviarossi engine.

Rick … More great looking freight cars.

I’ll post my 4th of July parade photos I took a few years ago.

Great stuff everybody.

Here’s my Minitirx I1sa. I recently upgraded it to DCC with a Digitrax DZ123 decoder in the tender. The final touch wasa whie LED headlight. other than some light leakage from the smokbox, she’s done.

Mike, Thanks for the WPF kick-off, seeing your photos and vast supply of modeling energy is always an inspirational joy.

A stretch of paved road for the peloton is still in the future, until then some industrial area cyclocross practice will keep those legs strong.

Thanks to all, Happy 4th and “Viva le Tour”! Peter

4th of July video with Reading steam. A G-3 pulls the American Freedon Train (Lionel set) around other freight traffic including a M-1, N-1 and K-1. All locomotives kitbashed.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Heck, Garry even gave us a parade suitable for the holiday[:D] I’m hoping that the Bear can stop in, but maybe they have him working this weekend.[:O]

Figured I’d drop in a few more pics. The MOW crew stationed at Tefft has parked their equipment for the long weekend, although they’re still on-call if needed.

Here’s #3 with the morning train to Red Mountain at CHattanooga.

And a view of the RR dock side of several businesses in Red Mountain.

Thanks as always to those who generate the WPF each week. It’s inspiring to see the great examples of many skills and ideas.

I can report that a DPM cab company is substantially complete, getting roofing, windows and LED lighting today. It sits at its future location, but needs a sign, appropriate interior items. Has anyone made a garage lift? Seems like a relatively easy task.

The next structure to attack is an (opposite) UP station, at which point the grading can be finished up as to level, road entries and parking.

This On30 pulpwood car started with a Bachmann 18’ flat and a Mount Blue Models rack kit. I filled it with split firewood (almost 900 pieces!) destined for the boiler of the North Atkinson Paper Co’s Shay.

Gidday All, last WPF I showed my “5 minute” (???) bulldozer which was a diversion from my ferry project which was starting to do my head in. While I enjoy the challenge of “translating “ and then making HO scale parts from photos, I felt I needed a simple task where someone else had done the hard yards for me. While the dozer was satisfying, quite some time back I had come across an article in the September 1977 Model Railroader by Brad Smith on kitbashing USRA tank cars from Athearn BB single and triple dome tank cars. What caught my eye was his two dome kitbash, and I even bought an undecorated triple dome car as a donor. So continuing my diversion I finally made a start last Sunday, but then I was further diverted by a phone call asking if my services were free for a week’s work down south, starting 0800 Monday morning. As a consequence this is as far as I got.

I got back late last night, rather tired, caught up with her-indoors, had tea, and quickly had a look on the forum, and saw that WPF was in good hands, [swg] besides I reckon it is appropriate for Independence Day Weekend to be started by a citizen of the US.

The good people of Hopewell Junction gather for a concert in the Park to celebrate the 4th. on the 3rd.

Good stuff from everyone. Commuters heading home for the holidays.

Bear,

Glad to hear you got the weekend off, mostly, after all. Figured you might actually be lurking hoping that some US citizen would jump in, given you’re a right and honorable gentleman from one of our closest allies and all that[;)] So I put a match to it and jumped in.[A]

That’s a mighty fine start to that project. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

Right now I’m enjoying the bottom of the barrel of a fine ol’ American tradition, taping a Grateful Dead show, the 1st of the 3 final shows in Chicago at Soldier Field. It’s been a long, strange trip and going to be a long night…[{(-_-)}]

Thanks for the holiday gtreetings. As I listen to the concert, I’m going to post up some pics of a holiday Goose charter on the Cascade Branch. Will drop a note when ready, but should start appearing soon here on this page.[:D]

JL Innovative makes a Gas Station Interior Equipment & Tool Detail Set. I have used it on a gas station on the Boothbay RR Village layout. The details are unpainted castings and the lift is wood.

Figures are not included, but Woodland Scenics makes a set

Hobbez!

That firewood load is absolutely fantastic! I hate fake looking lumber loads with a passion! Your’s is well worth the effort. It sets a very high standard.

Dave

Dave,

I agree, That one heck of a load of split wood. Makes my back hurt just looking at it, it’s so realistic.[:O]

I’ve got the first part of the Goose charter pics up. They start off page 4 of the Cascade Branch saga: http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/219241.aspx?page=4

I’ve got more and they will trickle in over the next day or so amongst the rest of the celebrating.

Mike:

I love the goose!

For now I’m going to have to make do with my own somewhat condensed version:
