WPF Sept 5/7

Ahh… Let the fun begin! I always enjoy this thread because I get to see some good photography and great layout work and other new stuff. The idea behind the picture below was that I wanted to try to create an early morning scene, just as the sun came up somewhere in the Appalachian mountains of the eastern U.S., maybe in the 1940s. Steam effects added with software because I’ve heard so much about what the real stuff can do to your layout.

For the photo buffs, lighting provided by a large-ish strobe with a soft box attached to simulate the lighting that you see. A white card was place off camera left to bounce fill light into shadows. Sigma 15-30mm lens @ 30mm, f/29 @ 1/160th sec. Nikon D100. Auto wb, raw format.

'nough of that! [:)]

Jarrell

Jarrell,

You have just raised the bar on WPF photography. I may have to go find a different sandbox to play in…

Outstanding photography!

Don Z.

Wow Jarrell What a great photo of some beautiful steam in the early morning

I’d be putting a bumper on the end of those tracks to keep that beauty out of the ditch .

Nice Work ! [bow]

I don’t know about you Don but i’m gonna wait for page 2 before i post any photos

that’s just too tuff an act to follow for me !

Don’t you dare go to another sandbox, you’re too valuable around here! [:D]

Thanks Don.

Jarrell

Hi Jarrell: That is an outstanding scene and great photography. Not much from me this week. Just the shop guys doing some cutting and welding and a shark in the shop.

Jarrell and Grampy kicking off WPF? the bar is set way too high.

J/K great pictures and modeling guys…[tup]

Ditto that, great work by Jarrell and Grampy. Jarrell’s might be one of those prints people pay big bucks for.

This week I completed some pickup trucks for my Boothbay RR club layout. They are the LL Scenemaster 50s pickups.

The first pair were repainted for MEC, and probably will be around the roundhouse and serviceing facility

The second are for the Dragon Cement plant and quarry. The more dirty one is a lube truck for quarry equipment.

I guess it’s time to lower the bar… [X-)]

Scenes of demolition on my layout:

I’m starting a major makeover project. All the scenery is being redone and a new (larger) yard put in. I hope to utilize several new scenery techniques I’ve learned over the years since I first built this layout.

I go not so far, demolition. But I replaced a throw bar.

Must be weird a working PC board throw bar to replace. But I like PROTO:87 look.

You see, the switch stand is working, of course. : [:)]

Wolfgang

George Paine, Nice work on those pick-ups - too bad they’re the LL ones though - the tires are too small or the wheel openings too large. Mini metals has some good pick-ups out, try them next time - your work deserves a better “canvas”!![:)]

Here’s a shot of my own layout deconstruction. I finished my tear-down this past week. It’s time to move on to bigger and better things.

I also made a video of my deconstruction. I took one photo everytime I removed something from the layout and put them together as a movie. I thought it would be something different and I think it turned out pretty cool.

Cool video

but you should run it in reverse

and it would look like it was under construction

GREAT work guys. Each week gets better.

NOW, I know Aggro last week wants to see me do a rust bucket…Well Aggro hows this???

Its a Ex BN and now its a BS "Birmingham Southern Railroad." I also added kadees, air hoses, and cut levers. Its a GEM!!! Well sorta.

I don’t belong on the first page, but I have things to do and want to get my image posted early.

SW8 setting serviced by night, but some track work at the front entrance needs to be completed first.

Jarrell: OHMYGAW, what an absolutely BEAUTIFUL shot to start the weekend off. It looks so damp and chilly that I can SEE the residue on the boiler of that big loco. Really FINE work![bow]

And Grampys: Beautiful. Just beautiful as always. Your modeling skills are a real inspiration for me. [bow]

Well, nothing new from me–ended up having surgery to re-build my knee about a week ago, and I’m not allowed into the garage yet. So I dug into the file and thought I’d show you the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots of my favorite Basket Case loco–the newer Yellowstone. Can’t wait to get out of the brace and get out there and give her some more running in. Maybe next week if I’m a good little boy—[:P]

The basic black is Floquil’s Grimy Black and I applied it with a–GASP!–spray can.

Tom [:)]

Wow, you made it look so easy. [;)] Nice video. I also liked the music (Coldplay).

Are you planning to build a new layout from the ground up, or leaving the hobby for something else?

The only hobby-related stuff I’ve done recently is host a friend (and his model railroader father) to my layout, and disasemble my Atlas SDP35 to fix a shorting problem… Worn out motor brushes, like some of you over on Electronics and DCC figured out… Hope I can fix it without having to buy a new motor…

Jarrell and DJ, exquisite images from both of you. [bow] You keep me trying.

Tom, what a great series of photos, and I live your steamer. Robby, you do very good work.

My eyes are going crossed from studying your handiwork. Can I sue you for that?
