Yay! Its finally done!!! my first handlaid turnout

So here it is. BK Enterprises #5 point/frog assembly laid over a CV #5 template on luan. Weathered ME ties, code 70 rail. ME micro and small spikes used.

Definitely learned A LOT. it was mad fun, though. Mashed a few ties, bent (more than) a few spikes, but oh well. it happens, haha.

I finally got my Fast Tracks order with my #7 pointform tool, so next up is will be my first FULLY handlaid turnout, with home-made points and frog. Stay tuned.

That’s a thing of beauty. Congratulations!

Btw, is that a powered frog?

Actually, those smashed ties add an element of realism. That’s a problem with prefab track; it is too perfect looking.

Mark

I like the smashed up ties as well. Some overgrown weeds would be a nice touch too!

Not too bad. You should get some of those Proto87 throw bars and some bolt bars for your frogs. Is that JB Weld epoxy that you used on your frog point rails? If so, be careful! That stuff conducts electricity and won’t insulate the rails from each other.

Great job. Looks awesome.

Greg

It looks great, congratulations! I agree with the others, the damaged ties look fine, almost like a derailment occured and caused the damage.

GS

wow thanks guys! haha.

to address the questions:

No, it is not a powered frog. I built this as a test, and will incorporate it into my layout as a stub-end spur turnout and will just wire around the frog.

I don’t know what the weld stuff is, haha. The frog and points were pre-formed together. You can get them from B&K Enterprises. Next time though, I will defintely lay the stock rails first, ala Tony Koester’s method.

I have some Proto87 turnouts coming, so thats its own thing. I didn’t want to use any frog bolt bars, because I liked the look that Tony Koester’s turnouts had at their frogs when spiked with small spikes.
