New Haven I-4, I-5, and the R3a.
A 4-8-4 is a Wyoming! [(-D] Seriously, I have to " give props" to the best steamer I ever saw run (and How!) N&W A class 1218![^] Nickel Plate Berkshire 765 is good, and much more alive than 1218, too.
I have to go with SP 4449.[swg]
Favorite?..GN M2 2-6-8-0
A oddball, you betcha, but it just has that look i love!!
NYC Jclass 4-6-4
It would have to be the GM&N #425, a Pacific type, currently owned by the Reading and Northern. It was the first steam locomotive that I got “up close and personal” with.
OMG PB, the 4-8-4 is probably called a different name on every railroad. A Pocono (DL&W), a Kanawah (C&O), just to name a few eastern ones here. [:D]
Definitely a mighty Texas (2-10-4). Never had the chance to come over and see and hear one in the flesh, but sure would like to have done it.
PRR Q2
Give me the AC-12’s the 4-8-8-2 Cba Forwards of the SP.
Of course, THE most popular steam engine C.P.R. #3101 Northern (it’s still around)
SP GS4 4-8-4 4449[:p][:)][:D][8D]!!!
Everyone likes all the big time steamers…sheesh
My vote would go to the D&RGW K27/K-28/K-36 Mikado’s.
However, I am quite fond of the D&RGW 4-6-6-4 Challengers and the Firsco 1500 series Mountains
I’ve long been fond of the Berk myself. I’m “collecting” pictures of them, usually with me in the shot…
The Kanawha is a Berkshire by a different name.
The 4-8-4’s original name was the Northern, IIRC, but as Tom pointed out, the engine had a lot of names:
Northern,
Niagara,
Confederation,
Dixie,
Greenbrier,
Pocono,
Potomac,
Golden State (GS),
Western,
General,
Governor,
Big Apple,
FEF.
Most other arrangements only had one name. A few had as many as three.
Almost any lightweight wheel arrangement on a lightweight, little used branch line. Have seen some light Praries and Pacifics that were pretty. Almost any Katy loco.
Shays, Heislers, Climaxes, OH MY![:O]
Any one that is operating!
[tup][tup][tup][yeah]
I used to think I had a favorite, but as they started to disappear…
each had its own character to be enjoyed and marveled at.
