Well all have AntonioFP45 to thank for turning this into a real topic. See even when it started out as a joke, we eventually found something worthing reading.
Ben, just curious. Since you enjoy mountains, does your track plan include a helix (I think that’s what it’s called) through the mountain? I’m referring to where a long freight train enters one tunnel portal and then exits another tunnel portal that’s below the first one. The engine crew can look “back and up” and see the last cars of their long train. This would really be impressive in an N-scale layout! I saw this on a PBS special on Candian Pacific Railroading. Mind blowing! I’ve seen many N-scale layouts in past MRR issues but have not seen one yet featuring this type of tunnel trackage.
What type of industries will you have on your layout? Any passenger service?
One more thing. You say you have a 3x6. Do you have the space to make it a little longer? Let’s say to 8 or even 10 ft. long?
Hey Iam stilla begginer and i think a helix would be too complicated for me but i may consider it. I want to incoperate some mining and logging industry. I might be able to extend my layout to 7 but im not sure f i want to now that iv started.
I have a quastion for you antonioFP45 I would like too know the same things about your layout that i told you about mine, and i bought a life-like brand freight car today for 5 dollers is this a good deal?
Ve von’t have to hang um high, ve have other vays of getting our information. Yesss!!, just sit down right hear. Bring in the battery and cables, yes ve do have our vay’s, yes!!![:-,][:-,][:-,]
Into HO since the 1970s. Had a brass track 4x8 layout years ago built with my late dad’s help. Scrapped it. Have had two shelf layouts since. [;)]
New Layout plan: Will be a 5 ft x 14ft. Two track mainline code 83
Time Period: 1965-71
Theme area: U.S East Coast
Setting: Mid-sized town (Walther’s Cornerstone series and DPM kits)
Rail Service: Local freight, Long distance freight, Passenger
Main Road: Seaboard Coast Line (locomotives from other roads will appear occasionally)
(These companies will utilize: Reefers, Covered Hoppers, Boxcars, and Flatcars) On a layout you want to put in industries that utilize your favorite freight cars.[swg]
Passenger Trains: SCL “Silver Series” trains and New Haven commuter.
Even though that wasn’t my intention I’m glad you got a laugh out of it.
The reason I gave you so much detail was to help encourage and give you some ideas. When I was 15, I didn’t know anything about having a “Theme” [:)] for a railroad or making it interesting by putting industries on the layout that would use the types of freight cars I liked.
Nor was I interested in switching and dropping freight cars off to customers. Engine service facility? Didn’t see a need. I was just interested in seeing trains run. I think I’ve come a long way since then. Thanks to this magazine, I’ve learned so much more in 2 decades.
Since there was no “internet” in the 70s and 80s, information was a MUCH SLOWER process back then. Thanks to this forum, even teenagers in high school that work part time, budget their money and have supportive a family can build attractive, realistic looking layouts that are fun to operate.
When I first started to consider builbing a MRR I didnt even consider including any industry and now I have plans for some mining and logging. I still cant wait to get a trian up and running but I need a new engine first.
