You know you're too far gone when

Or zip codes that just said “Cleveland 30” instead of 44130

Is that like Ynyswybl?

Introduced for larger cities in 1943. At one point I had a map of New York that had the zones marked in colors with their respective numbers. I believe these were the ‘zones’ that the 1963 ‘plan’ ‘improved’ on.

I think I was a bit confused between Mr. ZIP, the “Post” man who was the spokesman for Alpha-Bits starting about that time, and then the ‘Lovable Truly’ who took over (and had his own cartoon series – one of the few that made Scott McCloud - Space Angel look beautifully drafted…)

Didn’t like the looks of any of them. And for a child who had trouble making comprehensible sense of the Hoppity Hooper intro, there were contemporary promos for the ZIP system that would positively induce epilepsy in the susceptible.

Ynysybwl, Becky. The ‘w’ in Welsh is a ‘u’ sound, as in Cwm Rhondda.

Armstrong always said it rhymed with “municipal” on the cannon-day-gwuh

That pun was the only reason I could ever figure for using that (probably fake, but as KIX said, ‘you never know’) welsh-spelled name.

Added points if you can pronounce Youghiogheny. I found to my horror I could do no better than I could with mene, mene, tekel upharsin.

I like to give my daughter grief about being an Ukla grad. She comes back with it being pronounced Ookla.

O NASA! O UCLA! O Etaoin Shrdlu!

– song from Bored of the Rings. (Who knows the next line???)

Awww, my copy’s buried in storage. :frowning:

I’ll spot you: O Escrow Beryllium! …

You’re driving down the interstate and a car from Nebraska with a vanity plate “Ma an Pa” passes you and your first thought is - “that’s ridiculous, everyone knows it never ran there!”

Nah you see a license plate UP 8444 and go yeah I’ve seen her in both numbers.

Or worse, every time you see 844 you think ‘she looked better with a proper four-digit engine number’…

No you go damn she’s been in service for longer than the freaking B52 has been flying and will probably outlive the mighty BUFF. Then get all misty eyed and do what I just did place an order for the BLI Santa Fe 2900 class going next time it’s going the be the 844.

Home was WYman (New Bedford area. Family business in Fall River was OSborn. Cottage in Lakeville started with 94 but I don’t remember what that represented. And I too remember just dialing 38348 to call my best friend.

Late to the phone number party but our original number in Paramus was COlfax-1-0780.
And you’re right, it’s amazing how things like this stay with you, I haven’t thought about the number in decades!

Yup I still remember my phone number growing up in Astoria Queens LH5-9426…amazing

Coming from Astoria do you remember the phone number for Gimbel’s Custom Reupholstery?
MUrrayhill-7-0700!
I remember the commercials on Channel’s 5, 9, and 11!
