With apologies to the Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders’ Convention’s website designer, Bob Boudreau, I couldn’t resist the temptation to post these. I don’t know where he got them, but they are quite good. Perhaps some of you can add your own.
You might be a model train nut if …
-
you have a complete set of Walthers Catalogues dating back to 1935.
-
you think a reefer is a car you ship frozen foods in.
-
you don’t take a highway unless it parallesl a railroad line.
-
you deprive yourself of food on a railfanning trip to buy more film.
-
you wear a pair of striped overalls, a cap and a red vest covered with insignia of every major railroad possible.
-
your blood pressure rises over the centerfold in one of the model railroad magazines.
-
you have got more unassembled kits in the closet than in Walther’s warehouse.
-
you honestly think its a capital crime to discard old railroad magazines.
-
you camp over-night to be the first person in a model railroad convention.
-
you think dust is a pretty good form of weathering.
-
you think rail nippers are the best modeling tool ever invented.
-
you ever MU’d two model locomotives with the same road number.
-
95% of your photo collection is of locomotives and rolling stock instead of friends and family.
-
you place your thumb on the most visible part of a model to see if the paint is dry.
-
you spend $500 on a brass locomotive to pull a $1.95 caboose.
-
you write a letter to Santa Fe for Christmas.
I hope you get as big a kick out of these as I did. I realise that many of you have probably seen these before; but they may bring a smile to your face on an otherwise dull day at work.
Film?? What’s film??[;)][:p][:D]
I’ve done the second last one more times than I care to admit…lol
Timothy,
Ohhhh…how true most of these are, ok ok ok all of them are true.
Film in the camera…hmmmmm, I had to be drug through a time portal , kicking and screaming. My wife ,finally helped me pick out a digital camera { Sony cyber shot }.
This little camera works wonders and holds up to two hundred pics at one time. Now if I could just get away to take more train pictures. Hope you trip works out as planned, good luck and be sure to show us your photos.

A couple of additions to the list:
You go to yard and estate sales and pass on the $7.95 Ming vase to get model trains, reference books and railroadiana.
You dumpster-dive for free layout building materials.
At a grade crossing, you, “Stop, look and listen,” until a train comes along.
Chuck
HAHAHA! Those are all good ones!
…Your family photo in on an engine
…You take your children to the park by the tracks
…You name you pets after railroads. (I did have a cat named AMTRAK)
…Your work calendar is the Trains: Woman of the Railroad.
…Your investment portfolio is a list of all your engines.
…You pass the Electrician License test without studying because all of the wiring you did on your layout.
…Disneyland is knocking of your door to come make fake mountains and rocks.
…On your Vegas trip you time your lunch stop just right to eat at the McDonalds in Barstow.
…Your license plate boarder says, “My other vehicle is a Locomotive.”
…You have a coupler on your trailer hitch.
…Your favorite college is Purdue
…Your bumper sticker says, “This vehicle stops at all RXR crossings.”
…Your truck has a big window sticker of the NS horse.
I have more…
…Your mailbox is an engine
…You’ve highlighted all the train tracks in your mapbook
…Someone asks, “How’s your baby doing?” You say, she pulled 30 cars up a 2% grade last night.
…Your vacations are planned around railtours
…Your screen saver is nothing but train pictures
…Your son’s frist words were “CHOO CHOO”
…Your computer at work has DSL and you keep MR and TRAINS Forums going at all times.
You have plaster or some other modeling agent under your fingernails.
You gripe about having to go to Wal-Mart a couple of miles away, but think nothing of driving over 100 miles because UP #3985 is passing through there (next month, May 28, and we’re gonna be there).
You think, “Come here, big boy” is a catch phrase for a Union Pacific movie.
You need more basement, and less house.
You take your wife house shopping and the first place you head for is the basement or shed out back.
You hear the horn for the Missouri-Northern Arkansas no matter what, but you sleep through the tornado sirens. And NO, a tornado does NOT sound like a freight train. Not unless it picked up a U-boat when it passed through the last town.
You KNOW a U-boat is NOT a submarine.
You look at the trees, flowers, weeds, etc. and think where you can use that on your layout. Come to think of it, you look at EVERYTHING and think that.
You know ALL of the prototypical practices of your favorite railroad, but STILL can’t figure out how to “fix” that blinking clock sitting on top of the TV set. Some call it a VCR or a DVD player.
You think you look COOL wearing an engineer’s cap ANYWHERE you go.
You actually have a pair of ‘bib jeans’, but NO farm.
A clantily dressed woman is “in the way” of your view of a passing train.
There’s a “Gentlemen’s Club” near a LHS, and you never knew that.
Your significant other literally has to drag you out of the hobby shop, and she’s met with “but, I haven’t seen everything, yet”.
You don’t notice your wife has changed how she looks completely, but you notice some miniscule change in the layout at the hobby shop.
Need we go on? Yeah, but our wives (and husbands) love us anyway.
You take your family kicking and screaming 100 miles out of your way on a vacation to see a hobby shop that you heard was really good (don’t ask me how I know this).
Ron
Especially, the kicking and screaming part. Then you schlep around like a lost little kid when the rest of the family drags you to Disneyland or Magic Mountain. That’s ok. There’s always payback… like a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (can’t wait to go there, myself)…
I like and have lived most of them.
For you Canadians trans-canada hiway #1 is a model railraders dream. I saw my first railgrinding train there and thought the prairie was on fire. I have relatives in Winnepeg and I need to go visit them again just as soon as the price of gas goes back down.
Great list. I think I’m quilty of all of them!
