You Think You've Got A Messy Workshop

Jet, very impressive amount of work done on that layout and then you decided to make that giant switcheroo, Yowsers. It’s a ton of work for you to have finished up by the end of the year. But I can tell that you’ll get it done for sure even if it’s a little deeper into the winter. Cheers, Rick

Actually I had time on Thanksgiving (we had a family gathering on Friday rather than Thursday) and moved all the pieces to their new homes last week! Still have to finish some soldering and painting before I put all the structures back, but I have my first section and main yard running again already.

During college, when I lived at home to save money, my mom noticed I copied a filling system similar to my dad’s creating tall piles of paper. My mom got upset at my dad and had him clean it. Bottom line, do whatever works!

If that work room produced that fantastic a lay out, we lesser mortals should aspire to have a work room similarly organized into piles!

But I’ll bet you didn’t have any trouble finding what you were looking for.

Moms don’t seem to understand that it’s easier to find something if it can only be in one of a couple places. They want you to organize things in some logical method that only they can understand. Consequently you now have to search in 15 or more places instead of the original three.

One convenient feature of the “pile” system of filing is that you have a quick chronological guide to finding things. The farther back in time what you want happened, the deeper you go into the pile,

Arjan, Such an absolutely nice compliment. Thank you! (We do not have our post operations coffee in that cluttered workshop)

I model the sixty-mile long 1856 B&O (Brockville & Ottawa) because it was an Out and Back railroad servicing four formerly isolated communities. Therefore no staging required for operations. The south end of the railroad connected with the Grand Trunk which was only one year older and connected Boston with Montreal and Toronto. The date is May 16, 1856 and we run the original timetable… or at least try to. Rick

[/quote]…All our filed documents are in a filing cabinet that is maintained by the Head Honcho & Chief Tyrant. Recently I went looking for some Insurance relaletd correspondence, I could not find it under either “Home” or “Health” or “Insurance” or “Warranties”. When out of desperation, I asked her, after the eye-roll, she went straight to the cabinet and instantly retrieved it. Turned out it was filed under “ Julie” (her friend whose husband was the agent who sold us THAT policy). My filing skills are woefully inadequate, I find. So, back to the piles.

That’s nothing. My wife and I live in a small (800 square feet) 2 bedroom single wide mobile home with our three dogs, one of which is a 105 pound Bernese Mountain dog/Giant Mastiff mix. We both work from home. The smaller bedroom (9 foot x 8 foot) is our shared office. I also use my desk as my hobby bench. In a place this small we have stuff kept in boxes and totes everywhere (we downsized from a 2800 square foot house when our landlord decided to sell the house), so there is nowhere to store anything out of sight. I have models stacked on top of my dresser in our bedroom, And I have several more stacked on the wall of our office. My wife also has her hobbies, she knits and her yarn stash rivals my model stash, and her scrapbooking supplies are in storage. Oh and my 3d printer lives in the corner of the living room. It is enough chaos here that if the police ever do a walk through, they will undoubtedly remark, “there seems to be signs of a struggle here”.

So count yourself lucky to have a hobby room all to yourself - no matter how cluttered it is.
