Mine would have to be the Stewart Hobbies (Kato powered) F7 that I bought when I finally decied to get serious in the hobby. years later it’s still one of my best running engines and it’s been with my layout since the begining. Now it’s in GO Transit green posing as a F7AC and pulling long strings of Athearn commuter coaches.
REALLY, REALLY close tie between Stewart Hobbies GE U25B MEC#229(runs[:D] better than it looks) and Athearn Genesis F3A MEC#683(looks[:D] better than it runs)…[:)]hmmmm, if only I could breed them[:D]
Hi
My favorite loco alass is dead it was a Hornby 0-4-0 blue side tank locomotive
and spare parts for it are no longer avalable.
So it will get a plinth made for it so the next time I do an english layout it can go in the park for the model children to play with.
I just can’t bring my self to throw it out.
regards John
It’s the one pictured in my sig line. It’s a WM J-1 4-8-4 Potomac by PFM. It’s been remotored and had a NWSL gearbox installed with a torque bar. Veeeerryyyy smooth operating! Currently sporting a Digitrax (gasp!) decoder, semi-patiently awaiting a Tsunami sound decoder. If I suddenly found myself unemployed and had to sell off locos to support the family, this would be the LAST to go![:0]
Athearn “Blue Box” SD9 in SP bloody nose paint - the first US HO loco I bought, still a superb runner and very powerful - I can run this slowly enough to see the flywheels turning, that’s how good it is at slow speeds!
Athearn F7A+A in Lehigh Valley red - an Athearn SE pack, the first locos I added extra detail to (Walthers diesel dress-up kit). amazing power and as quiet as my Proto locos.
Lifelike Proto 1k C-Liner A+B in NYC black/grey. Amazingly smooth, powerful, good looking locos. Trying to find either an F3, RS2, or another C-liner to make up an A+B+A set.
Lifelike Proto 1k Erie-Built in C&NW yellow/green. Again, superb runner, loads of power, and looks great with a set of C&NW bilevel cars, even if this wouldn’t have happened in reality! Looking for the other road number to make an A+A pair (mine is 6001B, so I’m looking for 6001A, must be a store somewhere with one left).
I would have to say my all time favorite is a fictional one that I made. It is a GP-38-B. The BN used to make B units out of semi-wrecked units and would save on rebuilding costs by not putting the controls and cab back on a unit. So I pretended the Chessie did the same on one of their GP-38s. You can see a picture at: http://www.trainweb.org/chessie/Bill8.jpg
