your favorite era for railroads

I want to know what everybodys favorite era for railroads is ? why it is and if you model that era thanks bnsfpete

The late 1960s saw first and second generation diesels operating together (and a TINY number of working steam locomotives at industries such as Northwestern Steel & Wire), modern and steam-era freight cars in the same trains, signal systems from the first half of the century, and passenger trains in the railroads’ own colors (albeit often pathetic trains).

My favorite era would be about 1968 through mid-1980’s. Passenger service was changing from railroad operation to Amtrak and transit districts, freight service was changing from carload to intermodal & unit train and diesels were just changing.

I would have to agree 'even though any train is a good train the 40s 50s 60s are very interesting compared to now.Every station had had something going on the switch lanterns were lite up and a passanger train with a beautiful set of Es on the leed would pass a local with a Mikado on the head end ,with my goodness a caboose on the rear.Well its nice to look back thanks to rail fans we can through photography.

…Perhaps my thoughts would be the era of WWII. The railroads were operating with the utmost importance…Carring critical freight and war materials for the war effort and everything that would run was running. Passenger trains filled and standing room only at times…Hustle bustle in large Union Stations…A time when the war effort would not have succeded if the railroads would not have been there to carry the load…!

I like the period from the mid 60s to the early 80s. The end of the Streamliners, beginning of Amtrak, passing to the first generation of diesels. This is the time I was growing up and becoming aware of what was going on in the rail world. Yes I model this in HO.

Late 80’s early 90’s. That is when all the newer generation locos started coming online. This is the time when business was slow, but BNSF figured out the intermodel game, Powder River was really starting to get into the act. Then the loco builders finally figured out how to build good locos again. In prefrance to the GP60’s, SD60’s, and the newer AC’s. GE was finally just getting its act together(sorry not a GE fan), but they built ok locos. So the latter part of the 20th century. That is my bet.

For me, definitely the mid-1950s when I was an impressionable kid, as Don Phillips discussed in a recent issue of Trains Mag. There was still some steam (on the IC through Rockford IL where I lived back then) along with the new, modern, brightly painted 1st generation diesels and streamlined passenger trains. This is just before it began to unravel with the massive passenger train-offs of circa 1958. I model this era (CNW, IC, MLW, CB&Q, RI, CGW, etc)in HO.

I liked the 80’s and 90’s.You had predecessor roads colors mixed in with the new csx schemes.on a five engine train five diffrent paint schemes(including the stealth)As for modeling I model the B&O line with diffrent steam and diesel engines.
