My favorite is the Yellowstone monster. I have no particular reason why, maybe because it is such a big engine, but i simply like it´s looks. The small cab, the beautiful coal tender, the large firebox…everything is just fine.
Even though my primary interest is the GN, I have always had a fondness for
the NP’s class A-3 Northerns. They just have a certain balance to them that
I prefer. Since SP&S 700 is identical to the NP A-3 class-other than being equipped
as an oil burner-in fact, 700 was the next loco off of Baldwin’s production
line following NP 2667, the final A-3-I can say that the A-3 is still available to
enjoy (kinda-sorta)
I picked the A-4 over the A-3 or A-5 because of the sheet metal pilot. Milw Husons & Northerns, Burlington Northerns, the MP modernized Pacifics and Mountains…they all owe a lot of their appeal to those pilots.
I picked the A5, but it’s a tough call as all the NP Northerns and Challengers are really good looking engines. For the Northerns, the disc drivers and oversize stack give the A2 a more business like look, and it’s hard fault the classic looks of the A3, but I like the all weather cab, centipede tender, and smaller headlight that first appeared on the A4, combined with the conventional pilot used on the A5.
I picked the Z-8 4-6-6-4
I enjoy the look of the ClassZ3 with its big compound cylinder’s with the spear thingy’s stickin’ out and that short tender with the doghouse, can just imagine it stomping through a freight yard in Washington spewing smoke and cinders 100ft either side of the track LOL.

If you would have had the S-4 (4-6-0) on the list, it would have garnered at least 1 vote. MINE
