Your help (photos!) needed - Hood detail for D&H RS-2

I would like to detail an HO LL Proto 1000 RS-2 (#4005) to match the prototype - or at least a RS-2 in the D&H stable. The trouble I’m having is that I can’t find a picture of the top of the long or short hoods of these units. I have tried the Bridge Line Historical Society, Train Web, and general Google searches to no avail…Would anyone have photos of D&H RS-2’s to share, or know where some might be found? I’d even settle for other non- D&H RS-2’s that might be similarly configured (most D&H had Steam generators). If you have attempted or completed a similar detailing project a list of parts and manufacturers would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thank you for your help.

Happy Holidays!

The best I can find are these from Fallen Flags…

Nick

Thanks for the links.

With all of the D&H traffic through Oneonta my hometown) I’m surprised that no one snapped a photo from the Richards Ave crossing (a favorite spot for D&H railfanners). Maybe the RS-2’s were a bit before rail fanning took hold…Anyway, I appreciate your help [bow]

I also tried RailPictures.Net and http://www.locophotos.com/Search.php for D&H and RS-2 - no luck there, either.

Have you looked at Jim Shaughnessy’s book on the D&H ? And/ or, any of these websites for any other D&H locomotives, or all locations ? There may be one lurking in the background or as a trailing unit or yard switcher, etc.

Perhaps these might be helpful - even though they’re all for RS-3’s, not -2’s:

I am making some headway - It dawned on me that the local shortline and one-time member of the D&H family, the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley (CACV) owned some old D&H equip - it just so happens that CACV owned an old D&H RS-2 (former 4022 to be precise) which was renumbered to CACV 100, and later Delaware & Otsego 100. There are a couple of pictures on this site http://web.me.com/gino.dicarlo/FJGRRCO/DOS.html that help to narrow down the location of the steam generator installation. I will, however, still gladly accept any pictures that might better exhibit the apropriate location of the road specific details.

Thanks again to all.

Back in the Fifties and Sixties we got to view the D&H RS2s on Passenger, along with the CPR ones, for a while, and the Napierville Junction pair on freight.

Often D&H power substituted for an NJ unit if one was down or more tonnage than usual ex Rouses Point.

( Even the Sharks made a Montreal Turn, at night. )

On at least one occasion an NJ unit lead the Passenger into Montreal.

THEN came the PAs and everyone went to heaven and still lived.

Anyway, at first Alco applied an Air Cooled Turbo to the 244 which had it’s exhaust lengthwise with the hood.

( Note D&H 4008 has PLAIN bearings! but, we are not talking about bearings, are we? )

With the Water Cooled turbo, the exhaust was crosswise to hood.

The D&H Grey and Blue arrived c. 1960, and was one of the few ‘Second Gen’ Diesel paint schemes that still looked GOOD!

Looked good on the PAs and the Sharks!

Some new paint schemes looked terrible.

Think B&M Blue, IC Orange White, SOO Red White, CP Rail, Rock Island, New Haven.

The CN Worm scheme grew on you, after a while, a long while, but it could not replace the old Green Yellow.

Central Vermont part of the CN Family.

A LATE RS3 with Steam Generator. Class should read MRG 16c.

Note

Those are some nice photos. Neat to see early Alcos on passenger trains.

Note sealed beam adapter in hole for reflector headlight.

Later to CN with 3901 and used in commuter service ex Montreal.

Possibly LAST 244s on CN System.

Very few hood units had S/G on CNR.

Once again I would like to thank all of you that participated and offered insight. I also posted this question in a couple of D&H Yahoo groups and thought I’d link them here in case anyone has the same question down the road.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dandh/message/69372

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/delawareandhudsonmodelers/message/800 - this thread mentions the book “Delaware & Hudson” By Jim Shaunessy - there is a photo of #4012 on page 465 (shot from the side) that shows the fore/aft position of the steam generator stack and vent.

Thanks again.
