Whats your favorite model railroad train

Nice SilverChampion.

I’m fascinated with passenger trains. Good to read from a modeler that makes up a complete and realistic looking passenger train.

I’m currently in the process of building up a fleet of Walther’s passenger cars (slowly as my budget allows) so that I can make up the Seaboard Coast Line’s “Champion”, “Silver Meteor” and “Silver Comet”. Relatively easy since SCL used similar consists on it’s Long Distance passenger trains. As far as detailing, other than the grab irons I’ll definetly be painting the interiors which do look nice!

Couple of questions if you don’t mind: Do you operate the Silver Champion on a prototype style schedule? Also, what brand of locomotives or cars make up your “Champ”? (Athearn BB, Walther’s, Genesis, Atlas, Rivorossi etc?)
Have you detailed or weathered them?

Way to go on your streamliner!

When I get home tonight, I will set up my pass train and take pics of it on my son’s layout. but for now…

4-4-2 Atlantic MDC kit built
1 combine Mantua old tyme
4 pass cars Mantua old tyme

All Painted to one scheme, no Road name on it yet, i need to learn how to decal

My current “premier” passenger train:

(all Walthers, passenger cars are Superliner 1s)
MHC
Coach/Baggage
Coach
Lounge
Diner
Sleeper
2 Express Boxcars
MHC
1 Express Boxcar.

Loco choice is a little odd at the moment. I only have the one F40PH, so the train tends to run with a lash-up of NYC locos (unprototypical, but looks good!) I have a Proto 1k C-Liner A/B and a E R Models Sharknose which are the current motive power. The cars are in a variety of paint schemes - Superliners are in Phase 2 paint, MHCs in Phase 3, one of the Express Boxes is Phase 5…it looks ok though, I based the consist on what seems to be a typical Superliner formation. I do intend to buy another F40PH, which will be used on this train.

My favorite is my replica of the Entertrainment dinner train that used to run through my home town, For the last 2 years of its operation, I was a Conductor on the dinner trains.
I’ve had to kitbash or scratchbuild almost every car, but its fun to run it and remember the “good old days”[:D]

My favorite passenger train will be my City Of Los Angeles:

Rivarossi UP FEF-3
and either Rivarossi UP cars sets or Athearn BB streamlined car kits.

Mine will be QR’s Sunlander and another freelance train called the Mountaineer. It will consist of:
2x 3500 Class electrics
1x MPC Lander Power Car
2x MBC Lander Baggage Cars
2x MMV Lander Sealed Mail Cars
4x MAS Lander 1st Class Sleeping Cars
2x MCC Lander Club Cars
1x BEZY 60’ Container Flat

Mine has to be my 14 car Great Northern “Empire Builder” as pulled in 1948 by a pair of BLI E-7’s. Second favorite, though I don’t have it , would be a '50’s Western Pacific “California Zephyr” in the Feather River Canyon and up to Keddie.

Got the pic.

So the MDC 4-4-2 of SVT visits the NMO RR.

This is my favorite passenger train set up, not too long, but long enough.

btw, I am forced to run all my trains on my son’s 4’x5’ layout, my layout hasnt been built yet.

It will be loosely base on Slamtrak’s Capital Limited since it traversed the area I am modeling.

BC

I would model the 20th Century Limited and the Broadway Limited. NYC would be pulled by a Bachman Niagra and consist of the Riv A&B lightweight sets and the Pennsy would be pulled by a 4-4-4-4 T-1 (BLI) and the A&B Riv sets. I have the locos and the A set for both…can’t wait to get the B’s!!

Right now my full pass. trains include:

  1. Riverossi Woodburning American 4-4-0, AT&SF #2 (With a DECODER in it!)
MDC “Shorty” baggage, “Wells Fargo Express”
MDC 40’ REA/US Mail (w/ mail hook!), ATSF
    MDC 40’ Baggage/Pass Combine, ATSF
MDC 40’ Passenger (Sleeper) Coach, ATSF

2.) Any one of 8 little woodburning Americans pulling:
AMBROID/NORTHEASTERN:
a Baggage/Coach Combine
and a Coach

3.) Tyco Prarrie pulling:
Athern Standard Heavyweight Baggage/RPO
IHC Standard Heavyweight Passenger Coach
IHC Standard Heavyweight Cafe-Observation

I can put out several variations on #1 and #2, with Mantua & Roundhouse cars. Constantly working on expanding the fleet. Various roads & Paint . [:D]

My favorite passenger train is ATSF 47/48 Oil Flyer
Right now
The Coach Yard ATSF 3700 series PSCM baggage
The Coach Yard ATSF 3137 series Budd 52 seat chair car
PRB ATSF 1518 series HWYT chair diner
Walthers ATSF Valley series 6-6-4 sleeper

My “primier” passenger train currently is a doodlebug with a light weight coach, but I may upgrade to a short 4 car streamliner bulled by an E8. Rock Island of course.

I guess my version of the Southerns Tennesean pulled by an N&W J, will probably be my all time favorite, as soon as I have it finished. It probably won’t be really accurate, but as long as I’m happy, thats all that counts.

Seeing a J pull steel fluted cars sounds neat.

Alvie.

Right now, it’s a Troop Train circa 1944. Walthers cars, usually pulled by either one of my Rio Grande Northerns, Mountains, or if the train is short, a Rio Grande Pacific. Next is the “Royal Gorge”, pulled by a Rio Grande 1800 class Northern (often with a 4-8-2 helper), consisting of Athearn Pullman Standard cars. Right after that, is a “Daylight” pulled by one of my GS-series 4-8-4’s, consisting of both Athearn and Con-Cor cars. And close behind, is my “Yuba River Express” consisting of usually 3 or 4 express reefers, a Walthers mail, baggage, combine, and coach. It’s usually pulled by my 760 series PFM Rio Grande 4-6-0. It stops at every fishing hole on the North Fork, so I have to plan ahead.

My handle says it all–CPR RDCs ('cause that’s what my hometown road ran). Easy to model, easy to run, absolutely authentic, and readily available in HO or N. If I had the room, though, I’d model The Canadian, circa 1967.

Right now, my plans include about 4 favourite passenger trains.
One from VIA, CPR the D&H & Amtrak.

The D&H my motive power is from Proto’s PA, followed by Walthers D&H Budd coaches & Wathers Budd Dome cars.
This one would have to be my absolute favourite as it’s being lead by the PA.
