I believe this is the second article that has been written on this or a similar product. While I have a pretty good idea what it does, is there anyone out there besides me who thinks the article would have been much more informative if there was an explanation of its function, and perhaps even a picture of it? If so, please write

It does seem a bit incomplete. Axle generators on passenger cars, I’ve heard of. But to what purpose on a locomotive? To my knowledge, any diesel electric locomotive has at least one auxiliary generator driven by the diesel. Enlightenment needed indeed.
It is, essentially, the sender for the speed and event recorder located in the locomotive.
