Hi ! I have 16" radius turns including 4" climbs over 5’ distance. My intension is to run three track Shay ( HO ). However everyone is claiming that Shays don’t run well under such sharp and steep conditions. Translating these dimensions into reality, Shays were used in lot more severe turns and climbs. I’m not set on Shay, I will quite gladly go for any capable and reliable loco as long as it will work with DCC and sound.
My layout is free lance from Canadian Rockies. I will appreciate any answer from people with hands on experience. Thanks. Alois
Sounds OK to me. I don’t know about Shays but a Rivarossi Heisler will work OK.

I don’t see any problem if cars don’t exceed 40 feet in length and the grade change is not abrupt.
Shay, Heisler and Climax. All three were built specifically for the conditions you describe. the Bachmann Shay is a nice little crawler, and it’ll handle a 16" radius with ease. Rivarossi makes a really nice Heisler. All three should be very comfortable with your radius and grades.

Thanks everyone, now I can make my order.
