1900 logging railway

What ballast and roadbed should I use for a 1900 logging railroad? Thanks, Frank

If you look at some pictures, it was just ties on leveled dirt, especially in the woods. If there was a long “mainline” run, it could be stone ballast.

On my last layout, I used (real) dirt for any ballast on the logging branches. My layout also had a common carrier that was owned by the lumber company, so the “mainline” for it was ballasted in a more normal manor with stone ballast. In yards and sidings, a mix of cinders and dirt. I’m working on a new layout, and planning to do something similar.
