2008 [PART 2] and the Coffee Pot is still on and now 4 years old. Here we gather as friends with trains. Sweet ice tea too.

Gosh Jack - I was holding onto a slim thread that things would get better - [;)]

Another sunny day here today and supposed to hit 95. Wind has finally died down after 4 weeks and the guys are here restaining my fence (finally). For some reason they did not want to stain everyones home and car in the area - [%-)]

Brent - belated congrats on the degree!

Have a great day all!

Good morning,

Should get to about 92 or 93 today, a few degrees warmer than where anjdevil2 lives. Got a couple of wild fires nearby, about 50 miles to the west and another about 58 miles to the south near Miami.

Still looking for work, nothing as of yet. Economy is really bad, not even temp agencies hiring right now.

Lee F.

Wow it is humid and warm. T’storms building from this. Just finished planting MO garden. More cucs, okra, more corn and some watermellons. Cantalopes and some more tomatoes are not quite big enough to transplant. Got lots of peppers [hot and sweet] up in greenhouse. A few weeks and they will be out.

Brent, when weather forecasts call for “100% humidity”, this refers to the “relative humidity”, and not the total percentage of water vapor in the atmosphere. The humidity value tells us how much water vapor the air is holding “relative” to the maximum amount of water vapor that it could hold at a given temperature. Thus, a 100% humidity level only means that the air is holding all (100%) of the moisture that it can possibly hold at that temperature and pressure.

A simple way to visualize this is to imagine water vapor molecules floating around between the nitrogen and oxygen molecules that make up our air. As the temperature rises, the air expands and there is more space available between the nitrogen and oxygen molecules to hold extra water molecules. As the air cools, the nitrogen and oxygen air molecules move back closer to each other, and, in effect, they squeeze out the water molecules between them, in much the same way as we squeeze the water out of a wet sponge.

The temperature to which the air must cool before the water vapor in the air condenses back into a liquid state is what we call the dew point. This is why we see dew on the grass in the morning. While the hot air during the day was able to hold a lot of water vapor, once the temperature begins to drop overnight, the air can no longer hold all of those water molecules, and the water vapor gets “squeezed” back out as condensation or dew.

Just an update…

Chris is getting released from the hospital today, he still has a tube in his chest which is to evacuate air. As a result of the X-Rays, he still has a small amount of leakage from the lung, but the Dr., is hoping that will close soon. So they want him back on Thursday to determine whether or not surgery is required to “staple” the opening. The Dr indicated that if the lung forms the scar tissue to close the opening, that there is a 30% chance of a reoccurance within the 1 to 1 1/2 yrs. If they do the staple then that goes away. So we need to wait and see what happens on Thursday. Overall, he is doing pretty good, has occassional pain just due to the presence of the “tube”. Certainly, will be glad when get back to primarily being concerned about trains.

I’m still getting every CTT post emailed to me and my inbox gets buried…lots of deleting. Since the emails are dumping into my business email address, it’s creating an issue for me. I’ve gone into my profile a bunch of times under email options and have remembered to punch the save changes button on the bottom to no avail. I just get a message that it will take 10 minutes to update my profile.

Thanks, Chief. I made the mistake of reading through the FAQs for help and found something that recommends contacting the Administrator or the Moderator for help but didn’t define who these people were or how to contact them. I’ve seen different guys jump in to delete posts or to calm down a squabble, but Bob Keller isn’t the only one.

Guess

LAZ…THE SCOTTS PRODUCTS’ FERTILIZER WITH WEED KILLER WORKS BY ATTACHING TO THE LEAVES ON THE WEED AND HAVE TO SIT UNDISTURBED FOR 24 HOURS MINIMUM TO GET INGESTED AND KILL THE WEED. DON’T CUT THE GRASS UNTIL TOMORROW WHERE YOU APPLIED THIS STUFF OR THE WEED KILLER COMPONENT WON’T WORK. I actually read instructions from time to time. [swg]

JACK

edw - Thanks for the refresher course in meteorology (I learned all that back in undergrad).

Interesting article on the CSX Gateway Project.
http://www.timesonline.com/articles/2008/05/20/news/doc48323453e1caa152487083.txt

“More and more, the nation is becoming aware of the tremendous safety, economic and environmental benefits that railroads create. Our trains can move a ton of freight 423 miles on a single gallon of fuel, and one train can carry the load of more than 280 trucks,” Ward said.

So does anyone know if this is true? Do RR Engines REALLY get 423 miles to the gallon? If so then we need to hire GE to design automobile engines!

I’m not sure of their math, but that was a big story in the local news a month or two ago. Somehow they caluculate that based on the absurd amount of weight in cargo they carry vs distance. I have personally seen a lot of CSX advertisement the last couple of months, even before the double-stack release. I say yeah!
Wes

Brent and Wes…CSX is advertising here in MA. the same mileage figures, extolling the cost benefit for freight hauling. If memory serves me correctly, the ads also mention the benefit to air quality and relief of road congestion. Somehow sometime back CSX ran into a licensing problem due to repeated safety violations, and I’m not sure they can run in MA. at the moment. I’ll have to do some research on that.

Jack

Violations? Nothing that $300M won’t fix…

NS also did quite a bit of advertising, if I remember correctly their emphasis was on cleaner air and less road congestion by reducing the number of long haul trucks.

A little off topic, but do you know if MTH ever released the dual curved turnouts that they were advertising a couple of years ago? Ex is a 54/72 RH turnout? I’ve never seen them in real life, but I have released MTH publications with them listed.

Thanks,
Wes

Sorry Wes, but according to their shipping schedule it was canceled.

Thanks for looking Doug. It probably wouldn’t have worked that well anyhow.

Wes

Chief…“ocra.” I found that one in my cookbook. You’re slipping. [:D]

Laz…hope my advice on fertilizer got to you on time to delay your mowing and buy you some train time. That stuff, the weed and feed, works really well but is pricey.

Brent…try another shot of starter fertilizer on the newly seeded areas. The bag tells you how frequently you can reapply. It isn’t that long between applications and is safe for newly seeded/germinating areas.

Rich…100% humidity is what you experience standing on black asphalt in the broiling sun in the long lines at Disney (personal experience). We’re taking my 4 year old granddaughter there soon, am hoping she will tire more quickly than I. Then we can retire to the pool at our lodging with a frosty or two.

MikeC…I got tired of taking cars back after picking them up from the body shop. [banghead] I get so excited the car is fixed I neglect to go over the work with a fine tooth comb. In one instance the trunk gaps were out of wack, another they got paint on the rubber stripping and didn’t take the time to remove it, and another they did a less than stellar job reattaching body side molding. Made good on all, but it’s all in the details. “Make it look like it never happened, boys.”

Fife…a moment to “discuss things” with son. That’s the part where they repectfully listen to every word that comes out of your mouth with great

Hey, What’d I miss? Something to do about a deleted post/thread, but I never saw it. Oh well. It is a crazy day and I am on call. Came in today to find that a 4" pipe two floors up from here had burst. Under pressure, this ran for over an hour before the folks in Plant Ops were able to shut it down. In the end, a good portion of the hospital was flooded. They were telling stories of how it was raining in the halls. Needless to say, we had cancelled the first cases, but did one late case as they fixed things quickly and we are back and running.

Had a “Daddy Moment” today. I had purchased some equipment for the media department of our church. When I was dropping it off in the production room, I noticed that the kids were on camera as they were practicing the K5 (5year old kindergarten) graduation (they go to 1st grade from here). Anyway, I see my son on the TV. I finished with what I had to do and I went to the balcony to watch the practice. When he left the stage and sat down, for some reason, he just looked over his shoulder, right up at me…and just smiled. Made my day.

Don, make sure Chris doesn’t smoke. That is a sure way to cause reoccurance. They quote you good numbers…about 30% risk that it will happen again. Know the signs and get him back to the hospital should he have any more problems. It is not entirely understood as to why this happens. Some thought is to a collagen deficiency, but they are not sure.

Well, I have a bit of actual work to do, so I will check in with everyone later.

God Bless,

dennis

RockIsland52,

Thanks for the prayers, as it may have helped with an interveiw tommorrow at 1pm.

In other news the temp is about 96 @ the airport here in West Palm Beach. Seems like we are having an early summer! Hurricane season begins on June 1st.

Lee F.

RI52-I’m watching closely, if it appears to turn to an infection, you know ears, that sort of thing I will go to the Doctor. An old saying If you take medicine for a cold it will go away in two weeks,if you do nothing it will take 14 days. At least I don’t have to worry about going to work sick anymore. I am taking Motrin for my achy joints though.one or two a day max. thanks for your concern. S.J.

Thanks JACK for the info, I gotta start read them instructions and not just look at the pictures.

DON, glad he’s getting out of hospital, prayers for him.
