2nD LEVEL QUESTION

[:D]HI Everybody!!
I got a Question for you I’m building a 2nd level to my layout. Now I know the best anwser is to build a helix, but I do not have the $$$ to build one, so can I construct a ramp? And if so what do I need to do as far as measurments and determining the grade, I’m working in “N” scale, so I will be using: GP40’S RS1’S AND SD90 MAC’S on the grade to the 2ND level.

Probably the best way to determine what your engines will do is to set up a long straight test track…maybe 10 feet. Raise it a few inches at the far end and see how well they climb…keep raising it a bit at a time to see haw far you can go and still have satisfactory performance.

Make sure to test how many cars your locomotives can pull up that ramp.
I dont model in N so I have no idea what %grade that would be. XD

So where exactly do you live? Im in Portland Oregon myself.

I’ve just recently built a two and a half circuit helix for my HO shelf layout. It wasn’t as expensive as you might think.
My method was to use 5/8" Homosote, roughly $16.00 for a 4X8 sheet (only used half of it), cutting quarter circles and overlapping them at the ends to create the circuits.
I ripped a plank down to 1 1/2" strips and used these as supports with 1/4" dowel rods across to hold the roadbed circles. Each set of supports is secured to the layout table with L braces.
With the exception of the track; 20 or so curved pieces interspaced between sections of flex track; I’m calculating a total cost of under $20 and I still have a half sheet of Homosote for use in the second level benchwork. It’s not especially pretty but it’s certainly functional and a far cry less expensive than the $200+ deals I was able to find online. [:D]
I used the Atlas track to judge the shape of the quarter rounds, allowing an inch or two for overlaps at each end. At bit of Gorrila glue gave a good strong bond. Be careful during assembly to allow for enough clearance on the inside around the supports.
