Can anyone tell me if the Barrel Car operates on RCS track sections? I have a barrel car but not the OTC lockon.
I’m pretty sure that it will work with the RCS. I believe the reason for the OTC lock on was so that you could operate both the car and ramp from the same switch. It also allowed you to get the proper positioning for unloading. Not really a big deal, but handy.
Thanks Elliot!!! My son and I will give it a try. Would you happen to know a good place to buy parts such as the OTC lockon?
Good question. The OTC is one of those odd little things that you find in the bottom of a box of junk or track.
If you have a hobby store that deals in used trains you might find one there. Another idea is to check at train shows. Depending on where you live, there might be a Great American Train Show (GATS) near you. Most of those shows have parts dealers. Don’t forget, you are on the web, and a search for Lionel parts will probably turn up a number of sources.
Now you have me racking my brain, trying to figure out which accessories, beside the barrel ramp, used an OTC. Horse corral, yes, but not cattle pen. Log and coal dump cars both used the RCS with sliding shoes on both trucks. Is it just those two? Hmmm.[%-)][;)][:)]
You should be able to order it from You can order it from Warren’s Trains at web address is http://www.wmtlionelparts.com
Ive operated mine on an rcs section before. Just keep one truck on the section, and press unload!
Thanks everyone for your input!!! I tried it and it works. On to the next accessory!!!
I finally hooked up my barrel loader two weeks ago and it works very well, especially since I wired it to track power. I run DCS and just tapped into the track power via a terminal strip. It’s fun to unload the barrel car into the barrel loader and really completes the scene. If you want, I can post some pic’s if your’e interested.

Jon - It would be great to see what you’ve done. Since I am in the beginning stages of my layout it would be nice to see what other people are doing. Post some pics so I can check it out!
Here’s one of our areas featuring the barrel loader, ice station and the brewery. We have more accessories than room but we are still having fun!
First shot is an overview of the area
2nd shot is unloading barrels into the barrel car
3rd shot is the ice station and loading the block ice into an ice car, cool accessory
Hope this helps.

One more pic, loading barrels into the barrel loader.
Jon
Jon - Thanks for the pics!!! Your layout looks great!!! My son and I wired up the barrel loader last night and of course had to make several test runs to make sure it was running properly!!! I also have the same dilema of too many accesories than room. Maybe dilema is too strong of a word… Lionel accesories are what makes running the trains fun. I guess you can never have too many accessories!!! I like the way you coupled the ice station and barrel loader with a brewery!!! Now you can have your beer delivered cold!!! Brilliant!!!
I have carpeting on my layout and my barrel loader wouldn’t vibrate enough to send the barrels up the ramp, but it had worked well on the bench using 14 volts, the same as the accessory voltage on the layout. I bought four fender washers and placed them under the rubber feet on the bottom of the loader. Those barrels fly up the ramp now!
This goes back to something I’ve said in other posts: have this kind of stuff set up and running at train shows so the kids can see that it’s not just about watching a train go in circles.
