Ive been looking for 4x8 benchwork plans and cant find any. Im planning on making a simple 4x8 layout with the kid and need some sort of wood plan. Im planning on using plywood for the top and maybe putting 2" foam on top. Any plans?
But the “Your First Layout” Worlds Greatest Hobby Tape/DVD. It covers step by step on how to build a stong but light weight 4X8 table top, and it even gets coverd wth foam on top. SOunds like the perfect description of what you need. Not to mention it shows you how to build it Step by Step.

Before you get too involved in this, you might want to take a look here; http://home.earthlink.net/~mrsvc/id28.html
If you’re really set on a 4x8, I have some track plans that I’ve done, and some are 4x8’s. You’re welcome to check them out here; http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Track%20Plans/
Here are some 4x6s and 4x8 plans.
oops!
and
D’OH! [:D]
For a simple layout, 4x8s can be nice. I have had three. They are very limited and take a lot of space(because you have to walk around them), but for a families first, they are wonderful.
The base can be simple also, 2 pieces 1x 4 pine 8 feet long. Five pieces 46 1/2 inch long that are screwed between the 2 - 8 foot pieces. That makes a frame to hold either a piece of 4x8 plywood or a piece of 2 inch foam.
For legs you can screw 6 - 2x4 pieces inside the frame to desired height. Many people will suggest you brace the legs.
I hope this helps, and we can give aditional details if needed.

I didnt get the plans.
Model Railroader has a few good plans. I personally like the Turtle Creek Central, and that is the basis for my layout, but with many changes.
Can anyone link the Turtle Creek layout? I cant find it. Thanks
Don’t mean to hijack this question, but it’s kinda’ related. What size of layout do you use in what size of a room?
I think I found the layout, but you need a subscription to model railroader magizine. There are also a few pictures on the internet, but not nery good angles.
Im planning on 4x8 in a big garage.
One of the links I provided goes into that. Here it is again; http://home.earthlink.net/~mrsvc/id28.html
Don’t mean to be rude, but I think you misunderstood. Personally, what do you have in your home? What size of layout do you have? What size of a room do you keep it in?
See, thats how new I am. I dont have a layout yet. Im just starting one. Still in the planning stages. Have unlimited room but want something easy to start with. Sorry for the lack of knowledge. Just learning. Thanks for the help.
my bad
A 4x8 CAN make for a fine starter layout, if it’s done with care. Using a published plan can take out many mistakes (not all) a beginner can make, even if you make some changes. Just don’t change the plan so radically that it becomes unworkable. Here’s the next one I’m going to build while my “big” layout is still in the planning stages.
I have a 6x13 space I can use, since I haven’t worked out the design kinks yet, but the 4x8 is based on a published design. Note that I said based, meaning I made some changes, primarily removing the turnouts and crossing leading off the layout, changing the curves to 22" radius, and slightly rearranging the sidings and spurs to use the switches I already have on-hand. Otherwise, the track arrangement is more-or-less unchanged from it’s original design.
Once my “big” layout has begun construction, the 4x8 will be my portable “show” layout.
