70 ton ore cars?

ok here is a quick one, When were 70 ton ore cars used and when did they come into service? I have some for my layout which is set in the 1900-40’s. let me know,

Curt

70 Ton ore cars were in use by 1940(at least on Lake Superior mining area). I am sure there was a ‘mix’ of older 50 ton and 70 ton cars - The ‘common’ feature is the 24’ coupled ‘on center’ for dumping into the dock pockets. IIRC, Tichy has some composite ore car kits that are quite nice.

According to my book the first 70 ton cars came to the DM&IR in 1937. 70 ton cars (with taconite extensions) are still in use today on DM&IR (CN) although I think they are getting pretty worn out. BN built new taconite cars in the 70’s to replace the 70 ton NP and GN cars.

Thanks guys! You have no idea how fun it is trying to find “Old Time” cars in N- scale…

If you are modeling the Rio Grande, you might try Rio Grande’s freight car roster from 1887 to 1959.
