I would say dont bother. With a little bit of modification the athearn 86 footers will run on 18" curves, but its very difficult to keep them coupled to anything plus the massive overhang will demolish your trackside details. To begin with the couplers on the athearn 86 foot cars droop because of the huge “talgo stick” and catch on turnouts, crossings, etc.
I have several Walthers 86’ box cars but I do not have any 18" radius curves. All of mine are at least 30" or greater. I agree with the other post that they just don’t work well or look good on curves that tight.
I’m not sure if the die cast metal upgrade for the old Athearn 86 foot box and flat cars is still available, but there’s a simple modification using styrene strips that will cure the “droop.” It involves a pair of blocks slightly thicker than the end of the coupler arm, and a strip across under the pocket to hold it from drooping. I never tried this on anything sharper than a 28 inch radius, so I’m not sure this would help down to 18.
I was just wondering, a few months ago I found one for three bucks, and I just wanted one.
Last night was messing around with it and added body mounted draft boxes, and changed the trucks.
I agree, I dont think it can be done well, and already know it looks bad.
Thanks
