97 Coal Loader Question

Would I cause any problems by adding more buckets to the chain? Just trying to get it to load a little faster.

I don’t think you would want to do that…What transformer is your 97 hooked up to?? maybe you just need more power to get it moving fast… my 97 moves quite fast when hooked up KW…thanks.

Thanks. I have it running at 14v right now. I am worried that if I run it faster, the coal might pop out all over the place. I was just wondering if adding more buckets might move more volume without causing problems. I just don’t know if there might be some unforeseen problems with clearances. I did not think the weight on the chain would be an issue, but maybe that’s something to think about too. Was curious to know if others had tried adding more buckets to the chain and what their results were.

Just wondering if you use it with a coal ramp and operating hopper? If so, how do you like it? They look like a great action accessory.

Still trying to figure out the best place to set up the ramp, so I don’t have it running yet. I completely stripped and repainted it, so it looks good. Also got an original car. Need to get the coupler on the ramp itself to run a little smoother too. Not sure if I will set it up to run with the 97 or the 397.

The #456 coal ramp was never intended to work with a #97 coal elevator, although it might be interesting to see how it might be done.

The ramp included two posts for use in aligning the ramp’s bin with a #397 coal loader.

Hi, Chris. I know that the ramp was not intended to work with the #97, but it would be fairly easy to fashion a bin or modify the 397 bin to make it work. I am debating what I want to try, partly based on where I choose to set up the ramp on my layout.

Now, back to the question at hand. Has anyone tried adding more buckets to the #97 with success? Anyone?

I don’t know of anyone who has added more buckets, but I don’t see any harm in trying. You can always undo the changes if the modification doesn’t work out.
