Though I usually frown on graffiti, I was driving through Waller Texas yesterday afternoon and saw an old Rock Island box car sitting on the side track that was in really bad shape paint wise, but all across the bottom of this car was the most perfect and colorful graffiti I’ve ever seen… Who ever did the work was a true artist, and could be making a fortune painting signs, billboards and so forth. What a terrible waste of talent. I hope who ever the person is that did it goes on to bigger and better things. I only wish I could paint like that.
There’s quite a diifference in slinging spray paint on something and painting signs. I don’t really see where there is any comparison. Such vandals who may have some talent would be better off doing artsy projects on canvas of their own rather than attempting sign art.
Yeah it’s a shame how many good artists are out there ruining things by spray painting them. I’d almost wi***hat cities and towns would hire these people to do murals on the sides of buildings. Then they could graffiti away but have a purpose to it. Of course once that happens, a “rival” graffiti artist will come along and ruin the mural just because someone else got to do it.
Please don’t ge the wrong idea Bob. I don’t support graffiti vandals at all, and like I said, I normally frown on it. But who ever did the work on this old car needs to be doing better things with their talent…
I’ve always felt that if the railroads would hold public contests and allow these people to paint up old cars and give awards of some kind to the best artists, it might help cut down on a lot of it otherwise - not that it would, but it’s just a thought.
Tracklayer. That’s a pretty cool idea. Not likely to happen, but a cool idea. They could even use some of the old cars that are being used and that way the winners could have their cars traveling all over the country.
That’s exactly what I mean chewie8han. And the award could be tuition to an art school.
If anyone’s ever seen the work of the late artist Manray, his work seemed like some kind of wild graffiti, yet he became very wealthy from it. So todays graffiti vandal could turn out to be tomorrow’s modern artist… Like I said, it was just a thought.
That is a good idea, but there is a major problem with it. The purpose of most graffitti is to tag or claim something for whoever made the graffitti. If there was a car running around with somebody’s tag painted huge on the side, it would very quickly get all covered up with other graffitti.
this is a good question you see this on a lot of cars
alot
but it looks real on the model I just never tryed
to see others do it so good that trains are TAGED in ho scale
I think we need the airbrush for this one
Sunsetwestproductions.com sells some really nice grafitti decals on their site. It’s some of the easiest to use and is based on actual grafitti from actual cars.
This is a little off the topic but this last summer I noticed that New Hampshire had sprayed some kind of anti-graffiti stuff on all of there bridge abutments and it worked too, I did’nt see a singe tag all year.
The railroads could probably use this stuff but I’ve heard that as long as the graffiti does’nt cover up any car info stencils that they concider it (graffiti) a free extra layer of protective paint.
I’m sorry; I don’t think there is any such thing as a “great graffiti job.” I am against vandalism. I’m sure that if your car was spray painted in this manner, you would not be as admiring of their work as you are of train graffiti. People that do this have no respect for other people’s property. Neighborhoods with graffiti start to look like slums.
Spray paint is under lock and key at stores because of these criminals.
Having a contest to see who the best vandal is and then giving them schooling is nuts. People that embezzle money are usually good with numbers, so should we give them a degree in accounting or put them in jail. There are a lot of criminals with talent that would be better put to use in a regular job. I respect your right to like it, I’m sure you can respect my right to think they are criminals and should be arrested.
