A Mighty Fine Road...

A friend of mine is interested in modeling the Rock Island in the early 70’s. He picked up this bad habit mainly because of a rolling stock gift he received, which has since multiplied into a pretty big collection of Rock equipment.

Trouble is, he knows not much about the territory or operations of the Rock Island. I wonder if anyone can direct me to some resources that might help us design a layout.

In particular, I’d be looking for information about some of the heavier trafficked corridors, where the “nerve center” (major yard and/or engine facilities) was, typical traffic patterns etc.

He’s interested in doing a yard scene, and certainly has the rolling stock to do a good size one, so that will be a key element of the layout. I’m sure that rust and weeds will be another key element…[:D]

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Have him use the link below to go to Andover Junction, subscribe to “Remember the Rock” magazine, and buy all the back issues!!

Remember The Rock !!

He might be able to track a copy of their “Rock Island Modeller” special edition at the LHS, not sure if it’s still available as a back issue or not.

Have your friend check out the Rock Island Technical Society online at http://www.rits.org/ and the Rock Island Yahoo Group. Both are Rock Island specific.

Here is one of my own from the Summer of 1978 with a view of a northbound at Minco, OK.

Thank you, gents. I’ll pass this along…
